ffs
I just spent ages moving a desk and rearranging my computer and it turns out this is a really drafty corner thanks to the 'vent'*

*it is technically a vent, but it seems to be mostly a hole in the wall with a plastic grid thing on top.

Drop a bit of old carpet over it.
Or sack-cloth.
Ventilation in buildings is vital yet an arse-pain at the same time.

OOoo
I can do that without dying of carbon monoxide poisoning?
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:06, Reply)
Doubt it.

(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:08, Reply)
Yeah.
But your house will get damp.
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:08, Reply)
pretty sure it's a gas boiler thing
they had to add more vents or something before I bought it, and I'm pretty sure this is it
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:09, Reply)
Well put the heating on then.

(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:10, Reply)
it *is* on
this is just a drafty corner
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:10, Reply)
I used to have vents like that in my little flat
and I almost failed a safety inspection because the vent wasn't big enough. I think covering it up would be considered a bit silly.
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:11, Reply)
funny, I heard your 'vents' were ginormous

(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:13, Reply)
Oh, you're going on the list, bitch.

(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:15, Reply)
Can I go on the last as well please.
I don't like being left out.
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:16, Reply)
It's not the 'buying a pint' list.
It may well be the 'slap upside the head' list.
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:18, Reply)
Oops up, side yer 'ead say oops up side yer ead.

i am immune to your cheesy earworm attempts
due to watching the Folk Awards on the telly.

Has anyone interesting won anything?
Or is it just the same old faces?
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 21:36, Reply)
I though I was already on it

What kind of boiler have yee?
Is it old? Behind fireplace? Back-boiler?

Newish? Got an airing cupboard with a cylinder?
Combi or system boiler?

Give me facts, man, facts!!!
Actually just the make and model will do.

As for ventilation, that's only a safety issue if it's a heating appliance over 7kW with a non-balanced flue.
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:48, Reply)
The first one
There's a beigey fireplace that looks like it's from a few decades ago. The little metal bit at the bottom has the words 'Baxi Bermuda' on it.
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:51, Reply)
Right, well there we have it!
You have the most reliable (yet boring) back-boiler in the universe.
For that you do need ventilation :( but you'd be surprised how little.
Is there another floor vent? Or maybe crack open the door?
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:55, Reply)
no floor vent
but I could live with never closing the lounge door
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:58, Reply)
All you need is a bit of adventitious air.
Rooms obviously don't heat efficiently by convection if the doors are open, I'm assuming there's at least one radiator in that room? It'll get draughty :( but just crack the door a wee bit and things'll be fine. What kind of windows are there in the rest of the ground floor?
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 21:09, Reply)
Oh Gawd, you're actually going to kill someone on the internet with your half cut advice

(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:58, Reply)
perhaps, but I'm a larper

(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 20:59, Reply)
Perhaps rl is just a dick?
Perhaps.
(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 21:31, Reply)
Hey, where did the rest of this argument go?

(, Wed 8 Feb 2012, 21:32, Reply)
Ooooh.
