I haven't heard that yet
There's an element of morbid curiousity and also an element of knowing it's going to be unbelievably awful.
Other new "pop" versions of songs to be avoided at all costs include Sheryl Crow's take on "Sweet Child O'Mine" and All Saints absolute abortion of "Under the Bridge"

See, about twelve years ago, when I was in the depths of teenage humourless-borderline-emo-ism
I thought the original recording of "Under the Bridge" to be fair superior. With the benefit of hindsight, and a more mature outlook on music which comes with the realisation that the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are actually pretty shit, I think I prefer the All Saints' version just because it's less up its own arse.

But it would require me to listen to it again.

*defriends on FB*
Let me be clear that I'm no huge fan of the original, I'm not defending it on grounds of purism, but the All Saints version was awful. AWFUL. Regardless of original source material it was just a horrible song.

Yes, and I'm judging them on their relative merits, or lack thereof.
I maintain the All Saints' version is less shit. So still a negative, overall. Just less negative than the original.

The thing I like about the All Saints version
is that it annoyed RHCP fans.

I'm trying to think of other truly awful cover versions now
Apart from every cover of a Queen song ever. I actually thought Leona Lewis' version of "Hurt" was OK (in a palpably-not-a-patch-on-the-original sort of way), which just shows that I'm getting old.

Yeah, you're not going to be able to reach for that "defriend" button fast enough:
I think Queen are massively overrated as well.

It's actually not my fondness for Queen that's the issue
It's the number of idiots who think that covering Queen is a good idea. They were very much of their time and attempting to bring their songs into the 21st century is a fool's errand. As is attempting to sing like Freddie Mercury.

Yeah, I'll side with you on that one
Don't Stop Me Now is a fucking shit song at the best of times, but at least the late Mr Bulsara had the technical capability to deliver it. McFly's attempt to do the same was a classically shite example of a shite band playing a shite song in a shite and incompetent manner.

Anyone who disagrees with this post can have their opinions on anything musical summarily dismissed
The best thing I can say about McFly is that their drummer can dance

I think the original works if you're 14 years old and still think Billie Joe Armstrong writes "deep" lyrics
If you're not, Cash's version at least delivers the song in a vaguely respectable manner.
Both are, however, inferior to Sad Kermit's interpretation.

Yes, I am fully aware that "Hurt" was written by Trent Reznor
No, this is not a wind-up. Sorry, I grew out of most of the teen-angst-bollocks that I enjoyed when I was that age. There's very little of it now that I can still listen to.

I've just worked out what you meant by the Billie Joe reference
Apologies, I thought you were confused rather than dismissing by association.
I'm actually with you on this in general, Hurt being one of a very few songs from the mid-to-late 90s that I still love
