Maybe you're buying crap marmalade.
In my opinion, it should be very dark orange indeed, with lots of lovely peel, and only slightly sweet with bitter undertones.

Ahh, then you need a sweet marmalade with no peel.
Try Golden Shredless Orange® Marmalade from Robertson's. Not my cup of tea at all, but could be just the thing for you.
