Don't bother with the capsule machines, they're not worth it.
Get a proper coffee machine with a jug and a filter and that. The thing with a plunger is a cafetiere, only really useful for one mug at a time.

You don't need a grinder as you can buy ready ground coffee, although it's not quite as nice as beans you grind yourself, it's still much better than granulated.

You're welcome.

Thanks man....Can you please point me the right direction for a proper coffee machine with all that jazz, I don't really know what I'm looking at TBH.
Something around the £50 mark should be great, and maybe £10-20 on some recomended beans/roast/whatever ?

Have a look at Debenhams.
There'll be stuff around that price point there. You should get a pretty decent one for that money, they're not expensive.

Cool, so if I get her that, a grinder and some beans.... that would be all she needs?

(, Mon 25 Feb 2013, 15:58, Reply)
Yeah.
Sainsbury's carry a neat little grinder for about 15 quid.

'cus I wanna get it all in the same place to save on delivery, and I'm not a fan of Amazon, is this one alright?

cafetieres are fine.
get a bigger one if you need to. Fresh ground is indeed way nicer than ground and bagged and grinder is less than a tenner and can also be used for herbs and spices although having a separate one is best. Get beans from a wanky deli or farmers market and keep in the freezer. No need for a machine particularly as she lives alone

Cafetieres are bent.
They don't make better coffee than a filter machine and they're harder work.
(, Mon 25 Feb 2013, 15:55, Reply)
harder work how?
warm pot, put coffee in. add water and there you go. Not exactly krypton factor.

press plunger vs press button.
God, Monty, you're so last century.

Typical lazy Frenchman

Plus with a machine, you can put the water and coffee in before you go to bed
then set the timer to brew it for when you get up.

This mean you don't have to shuffle downstairs in your pants and slippers and get ground coffee all over the kitchen when you don't seal the grinder properly due to being half asleep.

There's a coffee shop in cockfosters, the whole highstreet smells of fresh coffee when they're roasting their beens. It's older than I am.
Do you think they're a good place to look?
(, Mon 25 Feb 2013, 15:57, Reply)
In truth once you have graduated to grinding your own beans it's all good - just a case of finding her favourite

(, Mon 25 Feb 2013, 16:07, Reply)
I guess it's like asking what someone's favorite wine is.... different people like different things.
But in this case it's all an upgrade from ribeena and vodka.
(, Mon 25 Feb 2013, 16:09, Reply)
You can get a stovetop one for 25 quid. Same grinder. Same beans.
More like espresso. French use them for cafe au lait I think.
(, Mon 25 Feb 2013, 16:15, Reply)
I haven't gone on to espresso yet
the machines for that are pretty dear.
(, Mon 25 Feb 2013, 16:19, Reply)
Not the presurised stove top ones.

(, Mon 25 Feb 2013, 16:23, Reply)
Yeah but they don't have those pressurised milk frother attachments
so that you can make the shittest flat white in history.
