Completely ignoring the question
But I wonder if any of you can give me an answer:

speaking with the missus last night I said that not only to Popes take a new name when they take on the role, but I am fairly sure it used to be standard practise for monarchs to do the same. I cant however give any examples but I ma sure I read it or heard it somewhere. Is there anyone able to confirm this or should I stand in a corner with a conical hat on?

You're forgetting Henry VII who was raised as Gerald Higginbottom until his coronation

Really?
I am sure it has happened, and I am also pretty sure that should Charlie boy ever actually get to be king he was going to take the name George, rather than his own name due to the house of Stuart connection. This would also mean that Harry would be known as Henry ~(HRH)

Think for kings they can choose to use any of their Christian names?
e.g. George VI's first name was Albert, George was one of his other Christian names.

I'll stick up for you here.
Yes it is common practice for monarchs to choose their regnal name.
For example, George VI was Prince Albert before he became king.
