if there isn't actually a decent bit of DRM to stop you installing multiple copies of a program on different computers, is there realistically anything a large corporation can do to find out if you are using it's software in accordance with the licence? We're talking very small business use here?

I know my company's been threatened with legal action by various software companies in the past. As for small business, I couldn't tell you, I have no experience of it. I can tell you that the threat of malware alone should be enough for IT to do something about it.
