The point is that lots of smokers can convince themselves that it's ok to smoke in certain circumstances, like in their car.
There can't be a person alive who doesn't understand the health implications of smoking, yet people are great at ignoring the facts, which is why there needs to be legislation for this sort of thing.

The facts speak for themselves - following the 2006 smoking ban, many people gave up altogether, or changed their habits so they didn't smoke in their house, etc.

Basically I'm advocating a nanny state here.

Nazi ^
I am all for people quitting, but until a government comes out and makes smoking illegal then they should simply leave us the fuck alone. Make information available etc. but stop making more and more draconian laws.

That's fine for nice sensible educated middle class people, but the proles really do need their hands holding through some tough decisions.

We benefit the country
Buying a hugely taxed product (the more than covers the cost of NHS treatment) and we die younger, reducing the strain on pensions for you non smokers... You lot should build me a fucking statue.

I'm not arguing for a total ban, I'm saying I agree with legislating to stop people smoking in their cars with their kids.

WHERES MY FUCKING STATUE?
The problem is that it is a blanket ban that wont be effective because the sort of people that it targets are the sort of people that are cunts and will ignore it. As Batts says up there (using him as a reasonably educated smoker) he doesn't do it around his kids, I know you also state that but the problem, as I see it, is that there is always a draconian approach to these things. It doesn't target the problem.

It's about changing people's mindsets
Of course it won't prevent all instances, but it will make a significant and noticeable difference.
Prohibition rarely works effectively - Cf. drugs policy for the last 50 years

I always find it weird how the only people who are pro a ban seem to be smokers,
and the only people pro these pathetic nagging little "Put the prices up", "Smoke in less than less places" are non-smokers.

Might as well make ashtrays illegal and lighters £5,

alright
I stopped about a year ago. Just stopped, cold turkey. I'd been smoking since I was 12. Don't miss it at all.

Your beautiful skin will attest to the changes

I know babe.
Plus, the expensive colognes I wear don't need to fight past a fug of stale smoke, so the chicks benefit as well.

Unfortunately there are no medals for such bravery.
In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who really cares.

My parents gave up when we had the calves
My Mam stopped about 3 days after calf 1 was born. Dad waited until he'd smoked all his reserves of baccy first.

7 years and counting now.
