I use it to mean 'exaggerated or undeserved importance', so stating that they named a track after a throwaway comment someone made isn't pretentious, neither is recording a live jam. Loads of bands do that.
If the music they make is shit, then yeah, fair dues, pretentious would be correct. But it's not.
