I think the running theme here
is that most accents are bearable when used by someone with a bit of education, whereas when they slide down the ladder of common denominator they all become quite awful

my ex had a really strong Essex accent
and the top first in his year at cambridge (as he never ever stopped mentioning). he said that many people formed the wrong judgment on his brains because of his accent.
