I'm going to repair my grandad's old record player this weekend, for example. People will probably say "why don't you get one of them CD burners that play that MPOggvorbs music what lives on your computer?" but I just like the idea of fixing somethign with my own fair hands so it can return once again to play some scratched up bits of dustbin cut-offs that had shit audio quality when they were new.

Modern stuff is useful, but nothing beats a good tinker to fix up old things.

I have an old car, I prefer to get my shoes resoled rather than thrown out, I'm capable of most household maintenance jobs that went out of fashion in the 50s.
I'm a bit of an anachronism, really.

But it's still a shock when people can't even do simple tasks like putting up a shelf.

I'll have a crack at anything short of mains electrics and structural stuff.

I've done so much work in the house and garden this year that would have otherwise cost a fortune.

Rebuilding things is great, a few weeks back our front door lock broke and the missus wanted to pay a fortune for a locksmith I just cut the fucker out with a hacksaw and put a new lock in. I turned to her expecting to see lustful admiration, and she passed me the fucking hoover. MAN POINTS DESTROYED

It's going to live on my hifi cabinet being a conversation point.
People will go "Hey, it's one of them gramophonotables, me dad used to play Shakin' Stevens on one of them"
And I shall go "Hactually I prefer the sound, it's warmer and less clinical than CDs, hactually" even though I don't and think that people that do are cunts.

For years I kept an old Sony Music Centre running taking it apart and rebuilding and that had massive wooden cab speakers I loved that thing

Lift up centre for a turntable and woven fabric covered speaker bays. There was one on eBay the other week. Proper cherry wood. Lovely.

My folks had one (when I was very young) and I am sure it had a drinks cabinet built into it as well

It looks incredible. No idea if it still works though.
