The thought of being so skint you couldn't afford Tesco Value shite is scary
I think part of the issue is keeping up the Sky subscription and the X-Box for most of the people who go there.

my friend who is a health visitor had stories about council grants that'd make you weep
one woman got £3k for a new kitchen. and promptly blued it on designer clothes for her baby. the thought was there, but jesus christ.

another got money for new carpets, because her toddler and baby were crawling around on bare boards and nails. when sj went back to see them a few weeks later, still no carpets, but one fuck-off shiny television and playstation.

This sounds like it is based on balanced research of the problems of poverty and not at all daily mail kneejerk-type thinking

government handouts should only be spent on groceries, clothing and shelter
In fact they should only get vouchers for certain shops, so they can't waste it the useless buggers
