Cardiff
Any b3tans around here tonight?

Any decent places to eat/visit/would recommend for a day out in the city/surrounds tomorrow?

Serves me right for going on holiday and not bothering to plan!

Bute Park
Is nice for a walk although according to the beeb the outlook for tomorrow overcast so that might not be the best bet for something to do.

Something I never got round to doing when I lived in Cardiff was visiting the castle. I've not been so can't say what it's like but the website is www.cardiffcastle.com/

As far as eating out is concerned my first stop would probably be the Old Brewery Quarter just off of St. Mary's Street as it's got all sorts of restaurants - you're bound to find something you fancy.

Otherwise you could try checking out www.visitcardiff.com/ to see if that helps.

Thanks
I'm an Englishman so rain does not worry me :)

It was pouring down just before I got here, and now its sunny, score!

despite having lived in Cardiff for 4 years
I can't actually think of anything to recommend...

what Captain V has suggested is pretty good as far as the restaurants and stuff go.

Never found all that much to entertain ourselves during the day when we were students, probably why I got stoned so much....

As a native
For a stunning curry go to the Spice Merchant in Cardiff Bay.

Fine dining, try Gilbys at the Bay or at Culverhouse cross

Chinese go for the all you can eat menu at the Fortune House on Salisbury road.

For burgers, go for Eddies in the Bay where you will also find Harry Ramsdens.

For the more active, the new olympic size and adjoining lesuire pool with flumes etc has recently opened in the International Sporsts village

Cardiff bay is aslo a good place to start the tourist thing. Lots to see, Dr Who exhibition, Lightship, water tours around the bay, loads of good bars, bistros etc and a funfair ride or two.

Cardiff castle might be worth a look at if you like that sort of thing, the shopping (so the wife and neices) tell me is superb in the centre and its always worth seeing if there are any late availability tickets for whats on at the millenium centre.

Oh, another thing
If you have a night out make sure you finish it in chippy lane. Found this website showing where chippy lane is. Looks like it might be useful in finding things to do. www.cardiffwalesmap.com/CarolineStreet.htm

There is also a map for Cardiff Bay
www.cardiffwalesmap.com/cardiffbay.htm

Never spent much time down that way really.

:edit: Agree with RadG's Mrs and nieces about the shopping. There's some pretty cool shops in the arcades. If you go shopping make a point of going through them.

Blimey ... Caroline street!
The only place I have ever bought a fishcake that tasted strongly of fish! Quite worrying!

Get there early to get the best vantage points to watch the tramp fights and don't wear smooth soled shoes. By 2am there is a thin film of oil and trodden in chips up the street and footing can be treacherous (not kidding)

My most memorable experience there
Was when me and a few mates were quietly minding our own business at a table in one of the chip shops eating some, believe it or not, chips after a night out.

A drunken chav decided he wanted in on the chippy action and tried to steal a handful my the chips I was happily eating. I warded him off with my wooden fork which caused him to let out a whelp.

In retaliation he picked up my tray of chips and started throwing them around the chip shop to disgust of, well, everybody.

For a good 10 or so minutes after that he repeatedly walk out, come back a minute or two later, hurl some abuse and disapear again.

Fun times.

Almost forgot
If Japanese food is your thing you must try the Ichiban at 201 Cowbridge Rd East.

Run by a lovely Japanese family and my current favourite eat outery!

Small, informal with none of the silly showey stuff that you see in London. Most tellingly, many of the customers are Japanese themselves.

Cool beans
Cheers peeps!

i've just been down to Cardiff Bay and Mermaid bay bit, had meself some fine eating in the Red Dragon centre :)

Theres a big trimaran thing in the marina, meant to be the fastest to circumnavigate the globe and runs on biodiesel.

I'm off to the Welsh Life museum in the morning and the castle in the afternoon, before seeing the sites of chippy street :)
