I'm trying to help a retard and need exact details of what a dialogue box says, but I refuse to use the abomination that is 2007 so don't have a copy of it to check on.
Reply here or gaz me...

It's a related problem though...
One person in the organisation (community group) has 2007 and nobody else does, so I want to tell her how to save in 2003 format by giving the exact wording from the drop down box (I'm 99% certain it's 'Microsoft Word 97-2003 .doc' and is the second one down, but don't want to risk confusing her more by being imprecise)
The issue is that several people are trying to view docs in workplaces where they're unable to install the converter pack, so I just want her to save in the .doc format rather than .docx.
I even thought of this when I set the laptop up and set the default save format to be .doc in options, but she or the program has managed to defeat this!!

Looks like they're still doing the online VPN TestDrive thing, I can use that!

Summat like "Office 97-2003 document (.doc)"

It's actually 'Word 97-2003 document' (or 'Excel 97-2003 workbook' etc), doesn't mention the .doc at all. (The new versions are just called 'Document', 'Workbook' etc, I guess they're going for the Mac thing of trying not to present file extensions to the end [l]user)
Had to be exact or I will just add to the confusion! It's even on the big spacktard menu as well as in the drop down so should all be good. Can't figure out why it forgot my settings though, or maybe she's just overriding the default each time. Sorted now though!

Of reverting to the default settings for no good reason, it's incredibly irritating!
It's why I stuck with 2003, more reliable, and less "Oh look how pretty I am" in comparison.

They say that ribbon thing 'improves productivity'
Er, how? By making all the buttons 20 times the size so they have to go on different tabs, when on my copy of Excel 2003 I can customise the toolbars and have a button for literally every single feature that Excel contains, and it takes up half the space?!
It does look pretty though... Which is apparently more important than functionality these days.
(and don't even get me started on disk space...)

The only reason I use it is for the 1,048,576 rows. If open office had that number of rows I'd use that instead =/

But to be honest whenever I'm over 65536 rows I'm usually gonna be using a proper database anyway...
Open Office is nearly as hideously bad to use as Office 2007 but in a different way. 2003 is my favourite version, after the old favourite of Office 4 which probably still does almost everything I want to do!

But I've never had need to use one before so it'd take me fucking ages to learn how to do what I need to do. Excel being slow when working that amount of data is an acceptable trade off for me.

is fairly repetitive (i.e we do the same things on a weekly or monthly basis) so we write our own software front ends for them, then it's just a matter of selecting parameters in drop downs and clicking buttons to run our reports/queries etc.
If you want to learn about databases I'd start with SQL, it's fairly logical and widely used.

At least not at the moment. One day it'll make more sense to use a database though.

tell her to either use her head for something other than holding up earrings, or get to fuck.
Then point down the hallway and tell her that fuck is that way.
