advisor woman has come to school and said that, amongst other things, we are focusing on the wrong aspects of literacy.
One of the answers below is what I do focus on at the moment, one is her suggestion.
I'd be interested to hear what you lot of grammar freaks think. Click the one you think is most important in primary (5-11) literacy.
*edit* Sentence structure means good vocabulary choice and getting the words in the right order.

This is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, learning another language might confuse them, but on the other hand, learning multiple ways of communicating a concept may help their ability to develop abstract thoughts.

helps one to organize their thoughts more effectively. Being able to get your meaning down in writing will often result in being able to structure your thoughts more clearly.
Spelling should be a close second, though.

I have one just learning to read and one 2 years older. From watching them, I know if the kid can't spell, noone can read what they wrote.....not even the kid that wrote it. Sentence structure is important as well for knowing what the hell they are talking about.
I would put full stops and capital letters under the umbrella of sentence structure while handwriting would fall under spelling.
Ah, fuck it. Just assign someone to go through life with each kid to do all their reading and writing for them.

You can't really separate the full stops thing from the sentence structure thing, can you? Getting the latter right means getting the former right.

That was the point I made. How can you have sentence structure if you don't have full stops and capital letters. How do you know when the sentence starts and stops?
This woman bitched at me for having "use full stops and capital letters" as one of my targets.
