I've just put out my back, the first time it's ever happened. Jesus Christ and the Seven Dwarves, but it hurts. The NHS web site states "Back pain will usually last from a few days to a few weeks." A few weeks? I can't move without moaning like a whore.

I can sympathise. I have a history of doing that. Hurts like hell.
One time it was so sore that it took me 20 (twenty) minutes to get out of bed.
It will get better eventually, but depending on how badly you've damaged it, it could be a week or two until you feel able to walk normally.
Oh, and painkillers won't work.
I'm a right cheery bastard, eh?

The empathy is appreciated. It was a long slow walk down the stairs this morning. I'm going to try a hot bath and some

exactly the sort of pain it is designed for

Tramadol FTW. Due to other problems it is virtually the only painkiller I can take. Sometimes it doesn't exactly stop the pain but by then I don't care!

a hot bath makes it worse. It increases the inflammation I believe. It's fine for relaxing muscles, but if it's a herniated disc it won't help.
I was told it's better to apply an ice pack to the sore bit. Although that didn't really help much either.
I know it's excruciating, but try to keep as active as possible, whilst avoiding sudden movements.

That would be nice, hell yeah, except I have a pretty mad reaction to weed so the benefits in physical health might be somewhat overshadowed by my mentalism. Mind you, I'm supposed to go fishing with the stoner ex today...

a herniated what now?
I thought I'd just pulled a muscle and I might even take some Valium and it would all go away. I'm not sure I like the idea of a herniated disc. It sounds unnecessarily complicated.

It's fucking evil.
One one occasion I followed advice and laid down upon a hard surface: the wooden floor of my sitting room.
Do not do this.
It was OK for a bit - until I realised I needed to pee...and couldn't get up. And I don't mean 'I could but it was going to hurt a lot' - I couldn't fucking move, pissed myself and spent an entire night on said floor, soaked in my own urine.
I'm a bit of a catch, me.

it will feel like a pulled muscle, i.e. sore, but a bit better when you exercise it.
If it's a herniated disc (when the squishy bit between your vertebrae gets damaged and pops out in a little balloon, trapping a nerve) you will feel constantly sore, and an excruciatingly bad sharp pain when you turn a particular way, which is often any way except one position in which you are semi comfortable.

you sex god.
Yeah, things other than sitting up in bed should be hard in the morning.
@K2k6 - I'll try moving (slowly) around and see if anything eases. Damn. I had a nice long run mapped out for this morning but that's a non-starter now.

I was engaged in some pleasurable nocturnal oscillatory exercise, but felt my lower back having a bit of a twinge. "Bloody hell", I thought. "I hope I finish before my back gives out".
The problem with that was then that I was so concerned with the state of my back that I wasn't concentrating on the job in hand, which prolonged events somewhat. Something of a vicious circle.
Thankfully, matters came to a successful conclusion, and I never did let on to my GF why I managed to keep going for so long!

Er, yes I was. I just reread my post though, and it is a little ambiguous...

I woke up this morning unable to turn my neck more than about 20 degrees left or right.
Drive to work was fun.
*shakes fist*
EDIT: Must've pulled a muscle in my sleep. Not for any other reason. My vertebrae didn't get welded or anything.

you have my sympathies. I put my back out about four weeks ago, and spent a week in bed high on super drugs.
Took me a couple of days to realise that the only things that would work were ice packs and staying in the same position for twelve hours at a time.

Tylex, Tylenol, Oxycodone, Tramacet, Tramadol, Diclofenac, Dihydracodeine, codeine, ibruprofen (1g).

the doctor took my blood pressure 3 times and mad the "hrmmmm :(" face every time.
worrying.
As for bad backs mine have never been that bad but I find ice packs good although be very careful of freezer burn. Also in all cases I recommend Solpadine as they best "feel good" over the counter painkiller there is!!
