And to be fair, they're pretty good - some kind of special foam, very comfy. Might have to invest.
I was already sold on them (In spite of being £30 each - I'll invest heavily in sleep related things) when he slipped in that they were researched and designed by NASA, so you know they're good.
At this point I almost wet myself. Everything, anywhere even slightly "high tech" is sold by mentioning NASA in the same sentence. If NASA invested millions in it, it must be good.
I composed myself and pointed out that the most comfortable place I could think of to sleep would be space - ie zero gravity (Pedants apply here).
What's the most utterly ridiculous advertising claim you've ever come across?

You can get the pillows a lot less than £30 each.

Yeah, think I'd blocked that one out. I can still picture their smug, slappable faces pretending to enjoy d:ream. Bunch of arse.
Heard one of them on the radio the other day trying to justify to John Humphreys why she was claiming her sister's home was her primary residence and the place her husband and kids lived, just a few miles away, was secondary and expense-able.
Sorry. I'm not smoking today.

Yeah, I'm sure you can - I'll shop around for mine, cheers BGB :-) Anywhere you can recommend?
I'm afraid to say this particular friend is too often taken in by M&S and Waitrose advertising...

Friendly bacteria?!
Bifidus Digestivum?
L. Casei Immunitas?
You realise the "L" stands for "Lactobacillus", right? But apparently that makes people think of off milk too much. Which it pretty much all that it is - just a fucking yoghurt. These things are NO better for you than any bio yoghurt. Bah I've had a stressful morning, someone cheer me up.

Totally agree there.
"Pro-biotic"... Fucking hell...
Also all those bullshit adverts for skin creams.
"Actually reverses the ageing process", I believe is a direct quote.
REALLY? Does it?
Fuck off.

The bullshit-merchants, or the mindless legions that believe that crap.
Stupidity on that level is pretty much an illness though.

spent millions creating a pen that worked in space.
The Russians used a pencil.

Silly lady.
EDIT God I HATE Kaol, SO much.

The apparent reason why US scientists didn't opt for a pencil was that they were concerned about people breathing in graphite fragments in space.
( , Wed 6 May 2009, 15:00, Reply)

due to the risk of graphite fragments damaging equipment. I remember this being on QI a while back, don't regular biros work in space or something equally silly?

"Uses in the U.S. and Russian space programs
There exists a common urban legend claiming that the Americans spent $11 million developing the Space Pen, and the Russians used a pencil.[1] In fact, NASA programs have used pencils (for example a 1965 order of mechanical pencils[1]) but because of the danger that a broken-off pencil tip poses in zero gravity and the flammable nature of the wood present in pencils[1] a better solution was needed.
NASA never approached Paul Fisher to develop a pen, nor did Fisher receive any government funding for the pen's development. Fisher invented it independently, and then asked NASA to try it. After the introduction of the AG7 Space Pen, both the American and Soviet (later Russian) space agencies adopted it. Previously both the Russian and American astronauts used grease pencils and plastic slates.[2]
Another rumor has it that the Apollo 11 astronauts accidentally snapped off a switch which was necessary to permit them to fire the engine to return to the Earth; and that a Fisher Space Pen was used to press this button. While the incident did occur, Buzz Aldrin has stated that he in fact used a felt-tip pen for this.[3]"

Work in space, because capillary action is independent of gravity.
EDIT: Ah right!

Vauxhalls - you are never going to believe this, but some people claim that they are cars rather than heaps of shit
( , Wed 6 May 2009, 15:26, Reply)

I drove a Vauxhall once, I couldn't actually believe how bad it was. They must have actually designed in some of the badness on purpose.
Having said that, the missus drives a Zafira which clattery engine aside, doesn't do much wrong.

The other day I saw an advert claiming that they were not only actually fit for human consumption, but also contained such exotics as "nutrients" and "vitamins".

My ex once spent £75 on a goose-down pillow for himself.
Just one of the reasons he's now an ex.
( , Wed 6 May 2009, 18:31, Reply)

I might as well come clean - I'm half Jewish, and the Jew is strong. Believe me, it will take a lot to make me pay that much for a pillow.
But when it comes to where you spend half your life, you should invest. Spend a lot but get your money's worth. Couple of hundred for a shithot mattress = good purchase. More than a tenner for a t-shirt, you're being ripped off...
