Possibly discussed yesterday, but what do folks think about 8 teams threatening to break away and set up a rival series?

It's a shite idea
They should come to an agreement. Bernie Ecclestone has the power to make everyone see sense. There's no way that there's enough sponsorship for two series in the current economic climate, and only one series would be covered by the big television companies.

And given that Bernie holds the rights to F1, that would be the big one, in terms of major television coverage. The breakaway series would be like A1 GP. May be good racing, but bugger all television viewers ever see it.

They've been gouging the sport for years and taking an astonishing amount of the revenues and people are right to be pissed off. That having been said, if it breaks into two races then the amount of money will cause the sport to die on its arse, mores the pity.

On both sides. Look at what happened when IRL split off from CART? It ruined open-wheel racing in North America for 10 years, and allowed NASCAR to take over. I think everyone expected the teams to at least publically threaten to create a new series. But that was really just a way to get FIA to back off on the budget/tech restrictions. Then the silly buggers went and sued. If FIA really thinks that will get the teams to back off, they've miscalculated in spectacular fashion.

I have a half-baked opinion I would like to add
I have an irrational hatred of Bernie Ecclestone because he looks like the Italian owner of a small, shit bar-slash-nightclub in my home town.

Also, if it's a prototype class, you shouldn't be putting a price limit on it. Innovation requires money. Or stealing the other team's plans.

I have another point. Max Mosely kept his job after being caught having Nazi-themed bondage parties with hookers.

After that, is there anything he could fuck up enough to get fired?
