I want one that gets at least 60mpg and runs on diesel. How much do I need to spend to get this?

But I wouldn't be averse to a new car since I won't be trading it in.

it's a nice drive too, and was cheap. probably older than you want though.

I want one that's comfy for long journeys as I drive a lot. A tape deck would be a bonus, but air con is essential. And it needs to be Diesel.

it's 1.9l diesel saloon, 110bhp. very comfortable, got climate control, cruise control, tape deck and cd multichanger, all electric windows etc.
it's a W reg, cost me about £3800 when it had about 60k miles on it.
I'd highly recommend one. it really is very comfortable for long journeys. solidly built because it's all vw and audi bits.

You could get an old Seat Ibiza 1.9 TDi FR. They're lovely cars, reliable, fast where it counts e.g. 40mph to 60mph for overtaking etc and they're built on a Golf chassis so they're solid! :)
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:23, Reply)

that's interesting. I was thinking of a Toyota as they're dead reliable. How are Seats for reliability?
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:25, Reply)

because they are essentially VWs. The FR ones are pretty quick too.
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:26, Reply)

That's the thing with Skodas and Seats these days, you're basically buying a VW without the badge and added cost. The build quality is very high! :)

the electrics can be slightly temperamental in my Seat, but they haven't been for a while, and it has been knocked about a bit.
it's got a fucking huge boot as well. last weekend I had 2 guitars in hardcases, 2 guitars in softcases, an electric bass, my amp, a 4 man tent, a snare drum, two bags of leads and a case full of cymbals in there.

Even in my Ibiza I managed to get a hell of a lot of stuff in the back. The biggest thing was probably a german shepherd!! Haha
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:33, Reply)

which is absurd in comparison to the size of the boot. stupid saloon cars.
I'm going to get a van when this one dies. and some kind of convertible sports car.
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:34, Reply)

A van would be a very good idea if you're lugging around band equipment!!
I have to say I've never been that bothered about convertibles, theres never enough sodding sun in this country to make it worthwhile. :(

my drummer has one, and so does my bro's gf. my view is: not raining = top down
the van is more for sleeping in as we go camping a lot. I plan to build a bedframe in it, and put in a stupidly expensive mattress like the one in my bedroom

Have you seen these...

They look so fun, I really want one! :)
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:43, Reply)

I thought some guy had done it himself!
I'm going to get a standard VW transporter and stick in what I want. I don't need a cooker or any of that bollocks
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:45, Reply)

Ah doing it the proper way with a real VW would be cool. I really got excited a few years ago when they brought out a new concept camper van, but it never turned into anything, I was gutted as it looked a-mazing!
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:47, Reply)

the dad of my brother's mate designed and makes the moulded interiors for them, and the seats that turn into beds and stuff.
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:52, Reply)

we need a new one and I want a really solid one.
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:47, Reply)

it's got twice as many springs as a normal mattress and a layer of memory foam.
I've had it for about 3 years, and this is no word of a lie, almost every night we get into it and go "man, this bed is so comfortable"

I'm sure you've still got that "spark" in your relationship.

because you don't think the right man for you is out there.

assume he's making an anal sex joke.
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:45, Reply)

well, not deliberately, but it was quite a good one.

but they charge a lot more because of the reliability! Seats are super. I never had a problem with mine and my sister has had three and they've all lasted very well and she drives like a mental person.
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 16:27, Reply)

The VW reliability myth strikes again. If you look at real-world statistics, the reality is that VW are in the lower-half of the pile reliability-wise, and certainly a great deal lower than the Japanese makes and Ford (who are surprisingly very good)
My choice if I was in the market for a 60mpg motor would be a Ford Focus. No question. I easily got that from the one I ran for a few weeks between insurance relacement cars.
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 18:51, Reply)

You're correct about the mpg being good but the build quality is shocking. I used to work for Ford too so I know a little bit about their mechanics, they spend more time scratching their asses with spanners and creating weird shit out of various car parts by gluing them together than they do fixing the actual cars. What I have learnt from working for Ford is to NEVER buy one and if you do own one, NEVER get it serviced by a Ford mechanic!
( , Tue 8 Sep 2009, 19:31, Reply)

Directly for a motor manufacturer (not Ford!) in product development. I can say with absolute certainty that Ford are streets ahead of other European manufacturers when it comes to actual quality of engineering and reliability. VW group cars have a high perceived quality due to the nice materials used in the cabin and trim, but the mechanical bits are well below-par.
Don't confuse the quality of a manufacturer with the quality of one of its dealers (the manufacturers don't own the dealers). In terms of dealers, you'll get good ones and bad ones regardless of which manufacturer it franchises.
