Florence and the Machine can fuck off and all
*mistakes /offtopic for the late, lamented www.playlouder.com* Anyone here used to post there?

Alternatively: Any decent music magazine type sites out there? I don't like any of the ones I find these days.

I quite like Florence
Tiz a good album

...Pink.

Truly vile.

Cunts, all cunts
(I expect - I've not heard them)

My ears are bleeding thanks to Radio1
overplaying Florence and the Machine over and over and over...

SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE PUTTING MY HANDS IN THEEEEE AAAAIR

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:01, Reply)
Oh God is that her?
Fucking terrible. Why do people bother covering 'classics'? Do they honestly think they'll improve them?

I don't rate the original really but it's a damn sight better than Florence's exercise in pointlessness...
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:05, Reply)
Hmmm covers that are better than the original?
Hurt - Johnny Cash

Valerie - Amy Winehouse.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:07, Reply)
Pixies - Headon
and just for Monty, The Clash - I Fought the Law
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:09, Reply)
You honestly think it's better than the original?
There are two versions by Bobby Fuller - the single version which is OK and his original self-released version which is stupendous.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:10, Reply)
I've heard an original
not sure which version but I'll do a search tonight.

But given the completely different styles, I'm not really that much into country - the original (that I heard) just seems fairly meek by comparison. But then again most voices do compared to our Joe ;)
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:12, Reply)
The original's tougher
more Buddy Holly than country really.

It's on one of the Pebbles compilations I think.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:14, Reply)
Radio Gaga.
Frank Sidebottom.

Thank you.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:10, Reply)
Have you been drinking?
You're in most comical form, today.

I hope to God you aren't 'high on life' - I hate cunts like that.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:12, Reply)
Oh I feel good.
Finally realised that there was more to life than fine wines and cheap drugs. I have put such childish things behind me and decided to focus my mind and welcome the good Lord Jesus into my life.

Tonight I build a pyre and burn all my CDs and albums, let the flames take the pot, the pills and the port and my soul shall rise like a phoenix from the ashes.

Amen.

Tell you what, I'll help 'tidy up'
What are mates for, eh?
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:21, Reply)
Neither of those examples
are 'classics' originally though, are they?

Actually Rodrigo y Gabriela's cover of Stairway To Heaven is extraordinarily good and may be the exception to the rule.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:09, Reply)
naa
it's not that good

their version of Orion by Metallica is much better

Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson is great
Marilyn Manson has covered a number of 80s classics pretty well

I've got a fucking incredible version of A Perfect Circle doing Imagine by john lennon. pisses all over the original, then douses it in petrol, sets it on fire and pisses on it again.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:13, Reply)
I got a live version of Stairway
on a free CD with Classic Rock Mag, I loved it.

EDIT plus, a wet, squeaky fart my gran once did pisses all over Imagine by John Lennon.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:21, Reply)
the Rodrigo y Gabriela version?
I imagine live it is better, their album is good, but it's not great, whereas the live stuff is superb.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:23, Reply)
yeah, it were champion
The studio version lacks the 'fire' of the live one, for sure
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:24, Reply)
Excuuuuuuuse me, Princess!

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:13, Reply)
Whitney Houstons cover of I will Always Love You?
Actually that fits your first point, it wasn't a classic in the first place.

Hmmmmmmm, I can't currently think of a cover version of a song I like that is better.

Actually, I did a thrash metal cover of Rainbow's Since You've Been Gone, mind you, that is a better version than Russ Ballard original, so now I'm confused.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:14, Reply)
what about some of the stuff off Garage Inc?

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:15, Reply)
Not better than the originals.
I'm not that familiar with the album actually, but I've heard some of it, and it's good, but it's just Metallica paying tribute to songs they liked, they haven't made them any better as the originals were aweseome, which is why they liked them.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:16, Reply)
fair point
that album got me into Diamond Head, who are freaking awesome
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:17, Reply)
I saw them supporting Thin Lizzy
before I had actually heard them, I knew of them though. They were really good.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:20, Reply)
awesome
the guy who engineered my band's CD worked on the original Am I Evil?
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:22, Reply)
metal spluffs

I rather like garage inc, it introduced me to loads of bands I didn't know
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:23, Reply)
yeah, got me into diamond head and blue oyster cult
worthy things on their own.

I like the album as a whole, apart from the first and last tracks on disc 1, which I think are a bit shit
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:26, Reply)
I Love Turn the Page

and the mercyful fate medley, where else do you get necrophilia, mummies and armies of the dead in one 12 minute song?
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:29, Reply)
that is an awesome medley
great fun to play as well.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:29, Reply)
Most people speaking of Garage Inc cite...
Whisky in the Jar. I believe the Dubliners version to be superior to both Thin Lizzy's and Metallica's! Although it's a kind of folky song with no real original... Didn't think much of Garage Inc thereafter...
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:17, Reply)
Richard Cheese's Gin and Juice is great

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:16, Reply)
Actually, his version of The Sickness is brilliant

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:16, Reply)
and Rape Me

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:18, Reply)
Ooooo!!!
Thought of one, look for Nina Gordon's version of "Straight Outta Compton" It's superb
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:15, Reply)
yes yes yes!

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:20, Reply)
Mark Fucking Ronson is a massive Cunt
He was hailed as some sort of fucking genius for banging out a bunch of pub rock covers of songs that mostly weren't even that good in the first place.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:12, Reply)
yes!

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:13, Reply)
Haha
His cover of "just" is a little bit special. Special is in especially shit that is.

Other terrible fucking covers go to Arctic Monkeys "Love Machine", Marilyn Manson "KKK Took my Baby Away" and "My Generation" by Oasis...
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:14, Reply)
That's the thing
all these hip young acts these days. They know that their target audience have almost zero knowledge of music so by releasing a cover of a classic, you've got a guaranteed seller and your idiot audience react with: "Oh my GOD I LOVE this song XD" without being aware that the song is actually a cover...

Fucking Florence
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:11, Reply)
lack of knowledge when someting is a cover is annoying

it feels like they are killing the original by burying it in shit.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:15, Reply)
The X Factor will ruin Don't Stop Believing.
Which is very annoying to me.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:17, Reply)
The Queen night on X Factor
just highlighted how painfully average these singers are compared to himself.

I mean one of those pricks didn't even have a decent crack at the "OH MUMMA MIA MUMMA MIA!!!" bit on Bohemian Rhapsody. Pricks!
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:18, Reply)
so very annoying
those cunts
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:18, Reply)
this is actually how Andrew Lloyd Webber operates
He takes snippets from classical music that you know but probably can't name, adds some gay lyrics and *bingo* 'a classic'.

In his defence he is the first to admit it.

Not in his defence, he's a total cunt with a face like a baboon's scrotum.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:17, Reply)
I agree
that description is not really in his defence at all...
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:19, Reply)
hahaha - office lols

I do enjoy certain Me first and the gimme gimme albums.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:22, Reply)
I like their name a lot
haven't heard them in years
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:22, Reply)

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:29, Reply)
Is that according to you...
...or was it designated?
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:32, Reply)
my ex
so a bit biased. she probably wouldn't agree now.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:33, Reply)
My other half would probably say mine is...
..."Love Comes Quickly" by the Pet Shop Boys.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:36, Reply)
haha
this puts me in mind of a time with my ex (not because of prematureness of anything I hasten to add). I had stuck some music on, and she was on her way down to give me a good noshing, when "Look to your orb for the warning" by Monster Magnet came on, the first lines of which are "Going down now"
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:40, Reply)
Mine is the theme from Top Gun

I want it as I'm cremated on a viking long boat on the Thames while a thousand women weep.

(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:33, Reply)
very similar to my desired funeral
although I want to be fired out of a cannon to land on the burning boat.

edit: I can play the main theme from top gun on the guitar. it is quite ridiculous.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:34, Reply)
It's so ridiculous, but that's its genius
this should have been in the bad films taht are great thread yesterday

EDIT: This would be the first thing I learnt on guitar if I wasn't hand mental
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:35, Reply)
it will probably feature in my film when I get round to making it
"Afternoon Tea with the Dead"
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:38, Reply)
"eat rock cake zombie scum"

Guess whose coming for tea?

The world has scone to the dead
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:41, Reply)
Tea with Mussul-zombie

Starring dame Maggie Smith, she already looks a bit dead...
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:43, Reply)
I like their album of country songs as well
the mix of Love Song by The Damned with the theme from Smokey and the Bandit is pure genius.
