There are two versions by Bobby Fuller - the single version which is OK and his original self-released version which is stupendous.

not sure which version but I'll do a search tonight.
But given the completely different styles, I'm not really that much into country - the original (that I heard) just seems fairly meek by comparison. But then again most voices do compared to our Joe ;)

more Buddy Holly than country really.
It's on one of the Pebbles compilations I think.

You're in most comical form, today.
I hope to God you aren't 'high on life' - I hate cunts like that.

Finally realised that there was more to life than fine wines and cheap drugs. I have put such childish things behind me and decided to focus my mind and welcome the good Lord Jesus into my life.
Tonight I build a pyre and burn all my CDs and albums, let the flames take the pot, the pills and the port and my soul shall rise like a phoenix from the ashes.
Amen.

are 'classics' originally though, are they?
Actually Rodrigo y Gabriela's cover of Stairway To Heaven is extraordinarily good and may be the exception to the rule.

it's not that good
their version of Orion by Metallica is much better
Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson is great
Marilyn Manson has covered a number of 80s classics pretty well
I've got a fucking incredible version of A Perfect Circle doing Imagine by john lennon. pisses all over the original, then douses it in petrol, sets it on fire and pisses on it again.

on a free CD with Classic Rock Mag, I loved it.
EDIT plus, a wet, squeaky fart my gran once did pisses all over Imagine by John Lennon.

I imagine live it is better, their album is good, but it's not great, whereas the live stuff is superb.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:23, Reply)
The studio version lacks the 'fire' of the live one, for sure
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:24, Reply)
Actually that fits your first point, it wasn't a classic in the first place.
Hmmmmmmm, I can't currently think of a cover version of a song I like that is better.
Actually, I did a thrash metal cover of Rainbow's Since You've Been Gone, mind you, that is a better version than Russ Ballard original, so now I'm confused.

I'm not that familiar with the album actually, but I've heard some of it, and it's good, but it's just Metallica paying tribute to songs they liked, they haven't made them any better as the originals were aweseome, which is why they liked them.

that album got me into Diamond Head, who are freaking awesome
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:17, Reply)
before I had actually heard them, I knew of them though. They were really good.

the guy who engineered my band's CD worked on the original Am I Evil?
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:22, Reply)
I rather like garage inc, it introduced me to loads of bands I didn't know
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:23, Reply)
worthy things on their own.
I like the album as a whole, apart from the first and last tracks on disc 1, which I think are a bit shit
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:26, Reply)
and the mercyful fate medley, where else do you get necrophilia, mummies and armies of the dead in one 12 minute song?
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:29, Reply)
Whisky in the Jar. I believe the Dubliners version to be superior to both Thin Lizzy's and Metallica's! Although it's a kind of folky song with no real original... Didn't think much of Garage Inc thereafter...
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:17, Reply)
Thought of one, look for Nina Gordon's version of "Straight Outta Compton" It's superb
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:15, Reply)
He was hailed as some sort of fucking genius for banging out a bunch of pub rock covers of songs that mostly weren't even that good in the first place.
(, Fri 4 Dec 2009, 15:12, Reply)
His cover of "just" is a little bit special. Special is in especially shit that is.
Other terrible fucking covers go to Arctic Monkeys "Love Machine", Marilyn Manson "KKK Took my Baby Away" and "My Generation" by Oasis...
