(or in the case of Melbournites, good afternoon).
I'm giving myself a quick break from the exam study, and I've perused the last few threads (my life is a laugh a minute . . .)
Tell me about your first car . . . (Honda jokes aside)
Mine was an olive green Mazda 929, about 15 years old at the time, two-door.
I thought it was the bee's knees: electric windows (average time for window closure - 30 seconds . . .), electric mirrors, and power steering!!! Bought for the princely sum of $2500 in 1998, while I was at Uni. Capable of getting to 110 kph with a good headwind and some luck on a freeway. Given to my Mum when I got a proper job (TM) and written off by said Mum 2 years ago.
I'm not getting into what I drive now . . . it'll only result in more Honda jokes . . .
So, tell me/us: what bomb/sparkly new car did you first drive?

Not this actual one, It was able to just get to 70mph, and it consisted mainly of rust. I loved it, and drove it round until it died.
It cost me 50quid

The poo-brown colour is lovely too :)
I loved my car as well . . . was very sad when it was taken to the wreckers . . .

I had two, one was Almond Green the other was El Paso Beige,
Both went for banger racing in the end.
They were so uncool that they became cool by default. All my mates had Ford cortinas, escorts or capris.

Morris Oxford series 6. I had a 1965 one, and one registered on 1st April 1971.
Crestas were Vauxhalls and more cool. One of my brothers had one.

then my (our) next two cars where Karman Ghia's. Loved them, and if I could afford a restored one, I would.
Currently drive a Scion Xa, my little putt putt.

It's a bit boring.
The Karmann Ghia though is well cool. A normal person's porsche.

But fuck...I so badly want a convertible Karman Ghia. The Scion does get 31/37 per gallon, though!
(, Wed 7 Apr 2010, 7:57, Reply)
the consumption figures, are they kilometres or miles per gallon?
My boring Mondeo does 51mpg.
(, Wed 7 Apr 2010, 8:02, Reply)
When it starts, that is.

On the freeway....some guy going 60? I get around him pretty damned quickly. And that's an auto!
(, Wed 7 Apr 2010, 8:17, Reply)
If your not doing 80 over here you get pushed off the motorways by buses.

one of my bro's mates has one, and it is a thing of beauty.
I preferred his 1979 Porsche 911 Turbo though

a 1994 Fiesta Si:

It was slow, had a woolly gearbox and handled like a boat. Every car I've had since has been a much better machine, but I still have a soft spot for my little fezza.

a 1.6l MkII Vauxhall Cavalier, 8 years old, 115000 miles on the clock and more than its fair share of rust.
In henna red (which was actually a hideous shade of orange). It only had a 4 speed gearbox, but it did the job.
How things have moved on. I used to get about 32mpg out of it. Nowadays I have a car which has nearly twice the horsepower but returns over 50mpg.

in 2002, so it was only a couple of years old because we lived in the back of beyond and my mum didn't want me to break down on the scary moors so she bought it for me.
He was called Zippy. I killed him less than a year later.

Automatic (well, "Triomatic") and with electric windows. It was mint.

But the first car my wife had was a Fiesta Firefly.
It was one of the ones put together from bits of the terminated XR2 so it was nippy (1.6 engine, 5 speed) and had Rocaro seats and a decent stereo. It was called Fred and she drove it until it began to fail to start in foggy weather. Not good on the North-East coast.

I paid £400 for her, I called her Miranda. I put black viper stripes on her. I put a flying spaghetti monster badge on the back. I loved her and cleaned her but never took my test. I sold her 6 months later for £500. I still don't drive.

My first car that I owned was a 1977 Morris Marina 1.3 coupe in maroon. Matt maroon that was once shiny. I bought it in 1991 at the tender age of 21 and paid £35 for it - £70 on welding to stop the front wing flapping and got £25 scrap for it a year later. It had vinyl seats that stuck to you in hot weather.Name? Horace..........
