This idea will only be of interest to cricket-loving B3tans, if any exist
For years Australia have been the best cricketing team in the world, but a barren wasteland when it comes to musical output. Now, all of a sudden, the best band in the world are Australian, and they're shit at cricket. Coincidence... or SORCERY?
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:18, 109 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
Who fuckin cares?
Have a tinny.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:20, Reply)
I think you'll find
The Who were from London.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:20, Reply)
I mean best band in the world NOW
not ever. That'd be Faith No More, anyway
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:24, Reply)
We shall have to
agree to disagree on this one, I fear
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:26, Reply)
I was hardly expecting you to change your presumably long-held views on this
That was possibly the most graceful way of concluding an argument in the history of the internet
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:28, Reply)
You're doing it wrong
at least compare someone to Nazi's like that argument on /talk the other day.

srsly?

I've never been on /talk. I've been warned that it's unwise to do so.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:40, Reply)
wimp, they're all fine.

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:41, Reply)
The warning went along the lines of
"If you think the OT lot are mean, stay off /talk"

And one of the first things you ever said to me was "Fuck off new person, you're not funny, you're just creepy"
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:45, Reply)
I stand by that statement.

MGT is excellent for that,
there was a 3 or 4 thread argument where she REFUSED to accept there was any need for escalators in the world.

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:22, Reply)
Pendulum
Duh
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:24, Reply)
Duh indeed

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:24, Reply)
Saw them Wednesday night
They were ace, although Slam was disappointing. Went mental during their Voodoo People mix though. Also, no encore?!
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:26, Reply)
I wasn't blown away by Slam on the live album either
Hadouken! don't do encores. Encores annoy me a bit anyway.

I am unbelievably jealous of you right now
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:29, Reply)
Have a hissy fit.
You'll feel immeasurably better for it.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:30, Reply)
Whatever works for you mate

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:32, Reply)
I don't like encores
it's the whole fake walking away thing that annoys me, it started as an impromptu thing where the crown beg you to return if you've been awesome, not a standard rehearsed part of the set.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:40, Reply)
It is fucking irritating
When a band walk off stage as if to say goodbye, with the whole crowd knowing they haven't played (insert name of band's most popular song here) and will be back once the adulation has reached certain levels
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:46, Reply)
I agree with this
we don't play more unless people won't let us leave.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:50, Reply)
I thought the only reason they wouldn't let you leave
is so they could smash your face in for forcing your musical abortions down their ear canals.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:56, Reply)
I'd have thought so too
but for some reason people seem to like our music
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 15:02, Reply)
Are Slam the Scots techno act
that used to be on Sabres of Paradise?
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:29, Reply)
They might well be
Slam is also a big song for Pendulum.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:30, Reply)
Ah I see.
As you were.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:30, Reply)
They're fantastic live
I got smashed to bits.

A friend of ours got near the front, put on a lifejacket and inflated it.

Morally grey, awesome when you're 18 and at a festival.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:35, Reply)
Surely someone must have bought him a beer for inventiveness
Which, when you're 18 at a festival, is sufficient cause to do more or less anything
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:41, Reply)
Pedulum, best band in the world at the moment, are you sure?

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:32, Reply)
I'm not.

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:33, Reply)
I am 100% sure they are not.
Does that help?
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:57, Reply)
Absofuckinlutely
The new album is a work of goddamn genius. I challenge anyone with a passing interest in danceable music of any kind not to be impressed by it
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:34, Reply)
I accept that challenge.

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:34, Reply)
I'm actually intrigued, as most of your muscical heros I would assume are dead or
rocking back and forth in an asylum for drug addled rock stars
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:37, Reply)
Apart from Angus Young
Who was last seen peddling the same fucking riff that he has been for the last 35 years
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:39, Reply)
I have fucking loads of dance records.
Good ones, like this:

Once again, the common thread is MASSIVE DRUGS, I'm afraid.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:41, Reply)
You see, it's so shit you need MASSIVE DRUGS just to enjoy it.

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:48, Reply)
Takes me back to less complicated times...

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:48, Reply)
I can imagine; I was a little young to fully enjoy it
I grew up with Brit-pop, luckily i wasn't tainted for life.

Last I heard, Terry Ollis was a school caretaker somewhere round Twickenham

Good old Tel.
Del Dettmar lives in the middle of nowhere in Canada.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:48, Reply)
There's a number of old guys still knocking around this campus
who occasionally get together as a band called the Pyramids of SNAFU. Nice fellers, if a little eccentric, and at least a couple of them corroborate stories about Ollis having played drums for them at one point.

Dettmar's an odd one. According to Wikipedia he actually spent most of his career as a roadie. And must be one of the few rockstars to go by the name of Derek...

one album doesn't make the best band in the world at the moment.

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:35, Reply)
Granted
That's not the sole basis of my opinion. They were running Muse close for the title before it was released
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:36, Reply)
now I'm afraid
we definitely have to disagree. Muse don't even make it into the top twenty
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:38, Reply)
We were bound to disagree on something eventually
I'm sure we'll survive

*breathes deeply, tries not to panic*
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:39, Reply)
you were doing well until you mentioned Muse
there are few more self-satisfied bands out there.

they did some good stuff, but everything for the last few years has been exactly the same.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:48, Reply)
I wouldn't say it's been the same, there has been progression from a more standard rock sound
to the space-prog-Queen-sound they have today. I prefer the old stuff.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:49, Reply)
I like space-prog-rock
maybe not the same, but following the same formula. There are much better bands out there doing similar stuff without the recognition.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:51, Reply)
There's this band, Hawk something....?

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:52, Reply)
-Eye, I believe, they play Apache Rock

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:53, Reply)
Nah - I don't think it's them I'm thinking of.

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:56, Reply)
What Hawkwind songs shall I listen to this afternoon?
As an education piece.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:56, Reply)
"You Shouldn't Do That" from the first side of "In Search of Space"
Don't know whether you'll like that one, but at least it'll keep you busy for 20 minutes.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:59, Reply)
Hurry on sundown.

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 15:06, Reply)
Good call, Porkles, very good call.
There's a 10 minute demo version on the Hawkwind Zoo EP that is even better than the released one, if you ask me.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 15:26, Reply)
I've heard of it but never been lucky enough to hear it.
I've still got my original copy of Hawkwind. Bought when I was about 17 from a charity shop.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 15:44, Reply)
Golden Void
Kings of Speed
Silver Machine
Orgone Accumulator
Kiss of the Velvet Whip
Assassins of Allah (Hassan I-Sahba)
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 15:09, Reply)
Or perhaps
The aubergine that ate Rangoon. I love that one.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 15:45, Reply)

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 15:03, Reply)
Nah - too far to travel....
I think I'm in Cyprus anyway.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 15:09, Reply)

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 15:16, Reply)
Go anyway.
It'll be great.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 15:25, Reply)
I too hanker for the "earlier stuff"
but I must take issue with you disliking a band for being self-satisfied
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:52, Reply)
I just get the impresison there is a certain amount of laurel-resting-on going on in the Muse camp
plus, I saw a recent documentary where they went back to their home town Teignmouth. They came across as complete wankers, and Teignmouth is a shithole full of cunts.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 15:05, Reply)
They make it into the top twenty
bands that are really, really shit.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:50, Reply)
it's alright
but they're hardly the best band in the world
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:35, Reply)
You see, you've already had to back track and downgrade from all music to just "dancable"
and as we all know dance music is the lowest common denominator when it comes to the quality of music.
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:36, Reply)
True
But there seems to be little point asking an ardent Sigur Ros fan to stop being chilled out for a minute and give this a listen
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:37, Reply)
I don't mind some "dance music", but the dross on the radio, fuck me

(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:39, Reply)
I agree, on the whole
I'm already regretting the use of said phrase but trying to pigeonhole Pendulum off the back of this album is like trying to piss through a keyhole into a thimble, for reasons I'm yet to adequately explain even to myself
(, Fri 28 May 2010, 14:42, Reply)
Pendulum are poop

No, Pendulum are definitely shit
They started off well but took the corporate dollar big time and have sucked many a cock to get where they are. They are about as credible in DnB circles as the Black Eyed Peas are in Hip Hop circles.

It's just piss poor watered down DnB for people that make spurious claims like 'dance music is inferior to live music', whilst gloriously missing the irony in loving a shit 'dance' band.

Judging all electronic music by the standards of Cascada, Dave Pearce, Tiesto, Judge Jules etc is about as sensible as writing off metal based on Green Day, Evanescence, Bon Jovi and Megadeth, while missing out on such wonderful bands as Sunn O))), Carpathian and Kyuss.
