getting married in august and costs keep mounting - we got the rings a couple of weeks ago, and they were shockingly pricey. still, we'll hopefully be wearing them for a long time to come.
it's all the fripperies that have shocked me about weddings too - flowers, cake, alcohol etc etc.

You can always sell them back. With the price of gold as it goes, you'll be making a good bussiness.

what about the price of palladium, which mr vitamin c has plumped for?!

mitigates the cost of the mrs's one.

but my engagement ring was (according to friends and my sister) very cheap, as it was under a grand. Still fucking extortionate, but it's very pretty!

that I'm Scottish. Anything that costs money is extortionate to me.

I designed my gfs ring myself, it's made of palladium and has a reasonable sized good quality diamond in it and was less than a grand. from my experience the more expensive ones are fucking hideous clusters of gaudy stones.

and it looks lovely, classy and understated, but still bloomin expensive!

But the rule that I had heard about was 3 months salary, although there was no way I was stretching that far!
(, Tue 15 Jun 2010, 12:54, Reply)
as it was, it cost me probably about half of one months, and the ring couldn't be more perfect.

I'd heard the 1-3 months salary thing too, mr vitamin c heard it, went white, vowed to get a job on minimum wage for a month, then calmed down when I pointed out that a) there's no way I'd wear anything that price, and b) it's jewellers propoganda anyway. Mine was about 1/3 of his (take home) salary for a month, and it's just what I wanted.

most solitaire ones are ferociously expensive. I got a sapphire/diamond one, and when looking, found plenty of gorgeous rings which were in the 7-10 grand category. then I went all high street jewellers and found a nice one we could afford.

and that the diamond is (in my opinion) at the upper size limit of taste, I'm dubious as to whether 7-10 grand is not some kind of idiot or taste tax

palladium doesn't need it apparently. makes me more pleased to have used that.

I spent a pleasant afternoon wandering around Hatton Gardens in the pouring rain not daring to go into any of the shops in case they arrested me for looking poor. It was quite frightening how expensive the bloody things are!
