How in the flipping fuck did humans as a species...
end up working 5 days on and 2 days off? something is fundamentally wrong here!!! how did this happen??? Life shouldnt be like this!!! I just want to have fun and learn cool stuff all the time. Excel should not be part of my vocabulary.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:42, 64 replies, latest was 15 years ago)
I think this every so often
I wonder how well the world would work if we worked 2 more hours every day and had a 3 day weekend.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:43, Reply)
I think how it'd be
If we stoped working like bastards and just enough to get going. There's something wrong with us.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:50, Reply)
And still no flying cars
it's 2010 dammit
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:43, Reply)
Most people in the world work a shit load harder than you
and will die by the age you retire.
Get some perspective.

get a sense of humour

he's a moody fucker sometimes isn't he?

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:53, Reply)
"fuck off" was one of the funniest replies possible to "get a sense of humour"

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:56, Reply)
how would you know?

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:58, Reply)
I'm very witty.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:59, Reply)
I see.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:00, Reply)
I just found out he's a student
I therefore agree with you. Go Psychochomp, you tell him, etc.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:14, Reply)

Easy tiger, my statement encompasses every worker in the world. So get off your soap box, stick it up your arse, and chill the fuck out. Seriously some of you fuckholes take yourselves far too seriously.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:17, Reply)
Christ you're in for a shock when you leave Uni

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:19, Reply)

MATURE STUDENT!!!!!!!!!! I understand what working is
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:23, Reply)
You probably shouldn't be whinging about it then

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:27, Reply)
Isn't that a contradiction in terms?

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:57, Reply)
Oxymoron. Aptly enough.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 13:20, Reply)
Then perhaps you should learn Matlab instead.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:45, Reply)
I keep thinking that
but then I think, I can do what I want in Excel perfectly adequately and quickly, so why bother
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:52, Reply)
Because
no matter how well you process it, and no matter how much effort you put in...the graphs will still look a bit cheap and nasty.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:54, Reply)
This is very true
and is the reason I use Kaleidagraph for scientific graphs.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:56, Reply)
I've got my excel graphs to the point where they look acceptable
I mostly use it for manipulating shit loads of data and it's good to be able to see it the way excel shows it.

I'm sure matlab can do what I want, but it's never the same thing more than once, so I'd have to write a routine to do it each time, whereas excel is adaptable enough to be able to do it swiftly and easily.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:57, Reply)
Just changing the colour chart makes a massive difference.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:04, Reply)
what do you mean?

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:06, Reply)
gaz me your email adress, I'll mail you a spread sheet with a custom colour chart.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:07, Reply)
from that you can import it to whatever spreadsheet you want.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:07, Reply)
much obliged

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:10, Reply)
when I get to the point where I care about the apparent aesthetic quality of my graphs
I will quit. And/or kill myself
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:11, Reply)
it's the only creative outlet some of us have at work
although, you should see the sexy map/schematic I just made.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:13, Reply)
ooh I love it when you talk dirty.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:16, Reply)
Etch-a-Sketch. It's the future.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:27, Reply)
It's because the lunar cycle
is 28 days. Which splits nicely into 4 sevens.

Having a day off in every seven must have seemed like a good idea to the ancients (seeing as, allegedly, God had the idea first). But we modern types have extended it to 2 days in 7.

It's not universal though. Lots of folk work odd patterns. I've a friend on the rigs who works 12 hour shifts for 2 weeks, then has 3 weeks on shore.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:52, Reply)
"On the Rigs", is that like "On the buses"
but with less 1970's saucy antics and more oil soaked pelicans?

"I'll get you deepwater horizon!"
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 11:59, Reply)
It's more 'On the Choppers'
as they have to fly out there in helicopters. He's told me a few hair raising stories about helicopter trips.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:00, Reply)
I bet they're "on the choppers", all those men in a remote confined place for long periods
They work hard and they play hard...EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:07, Reply)
Like it, Colin, like it A LOT.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 13:36, Reply)
My company almost did a crazy shift pattern which would've given me 7 consecutive days off every month,
I could've handled that.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:01, Reply)
My dad used to work 6 months on 3 months off
when he was on a ship and the shifts were 12 hours each.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:13, Reply)
my neighbour used to do that
on the rigs - 6 months on, 3 off when based on North Sea rigs. then he changed company and was 6 on 6 off in places like texas and nigeria
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:24, Reply)
I don't think I'd mind that too much
especially since my dad loved his job so it wasn't like an epic Monday morning having to go back.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:29, Reply)
My father got 6 months' holiday a year.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 13:37, Reply)
As a technical support bloke
I can tell you that Excel isn't part of many peoples' vocabularies, whether it's supposed to be or not.

*sadface*

Also, MTFU, welcome to the world.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:06, Reply)
You're that student that was moaning about work the other day aren't you?
MTFUYC and get on it with. Try running your own business - even 1 day off a week feels like a luxury then.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:09, Reply)
What does the first "C" stand for?
I think I've got the rest worked out
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:12, Reply)
I suspect it should be a U

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:13, Reply)
That would make sense
but they're NOWHERE NEAR EACH OTHER on my keyboard
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:13, Reply)
I am a shit typist.
It should have been a U. Will edit.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:15, Reply)
Oh, OK
Dammit, I thought I'd come across a New And Exciting Acronym (NAEA)
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:16, Reply)
Sorry to disappoint
My rage at hearing a bloody student moan about a summer job AGAIN distracted me from typing properly.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:19, Reply)
We should make a NAEA now!

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:20, Reply)
See the new thread I've just started...

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:20, Reply)
Ooooh, you're a goddamn hero :-)

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:22, Reply)
he's a student?
I take back everything I said. That's not real work you fucking lazy bastard. Wait til you actually have to do more than attend one lecture every other day, then you can whinge.

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:21, Reply)
Me too.
Workshy moaning always pisses me off.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:22, Reply)
Students don't appreciate
that actually writing a lecture takes far longer than giving it. It's a lot of work.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:16, Reply)

Nothing wrong with being a student. Besides I worked for 10 years to be able to live and put myself through uni so suck my balls on that one. Everyone on here today (including myself) seems to be "poor me, poor me" so you can all "man the fuck up you cunt" and enjoy yourselves a bit more.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 12:22, Reply)
Do tell - what are you studying?
Dare I assume it's not Economics?
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 13:39, Reply)
media studies
