which meant I could roll out of bed much later than usual

and thought of you. Really really made me want to go surfing
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 9:11, Reply)
you should definitely try it. it's not quite as hard as it looks
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 9:27, Reply)
so I imagine I wouldn't be able to grip very well, or I would definitely try. Plus I'm not the best swimmer ever (I can swim fine, but I'm not exceptionally fit)
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 9:30, Reply)
and less feeling is probably an advantage at first, given how often I smacked my feet on my board when I was learning.
I'm not anywhere near exceptionally fit, and I certainly wasn't when I started. It's similar to swimming, but surfing tends to use your shoulders in a slightly different way, and works your upper arms harder than swimming. It's harder on the rest of the body as well.
Also, I've got a massive bruise on my shin, and I discovered last night a bruise about 6 inches long and an inch wide across my belly, where I must have got hit by my board without realising it....

Recommend me a good beach where I can hire some kit and get a lesson, I'm going to give this surfing lark a go one weekend this summer.
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 9:46, Reply)
it's very forgiving, and chances are if there's surf I'll be there anyway
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:02, Reply)
but it looked so much fun. If I lived near the sea I definitely would. Can it be done in autumn/winter?
When watching the film last night, my sister came in as Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze were wrestling in the water and when she saw it, she quoted from the Mighty Boosh 'you have to marry me now, you've seen my downstairs mix-up.'

was in October, and it was ok then with a half wetsuit. I wouldn't want to try it in winter, but I would love to go again sometime.
Surfbash anyone?
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 9:58, Reply)
in fact I probably live as far away from the coast as it's possible to be in the UK - in Birmingham. I used to live near Blackpool though, I'm not sure which is worse...
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:03, Reply)
but a surfbash would be amazing if there was a b3tan that lived close to a decent beach
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:05, Reply)
and he can surf. All we have to do is persuade him he wants to host...
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:06, Reply)
which is why I go camping a lot.
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:09, Reply)
except for this weekend, when I've just called one off.
that's mainly because I did it last weekend and with sonisphere next weekend I need a break
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:15, Reply)
but yeah should definitely try and organise this
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:20, Reply)
not such an issue for me as I live nearby, but for others travelling from some distance it could be a pain.
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:24, Reply)
I surf all year round, but from December till April you tend to wear a horribly expensive 5mm wetsuit, boots, gloves and hood, which all make it harder to do.
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:03, Reply)
I'd give it a shot this summer before need for specialised equipment rather than just a rental, but since I'm going to row this Michaelmas term, I might be stronger if I wait

I don't know whether to hate you for your lie-in or taunt you for your slovenly nature, knowing that I can outrun you easily

He laughed and said it reminds him of back home, then he told me all sorts of stories about back home, Nigeria sounds like a good place to live, as long as you ignore all the crime.

"Nah', but I had a really friendly nigerian cab driver, who's cab I was in when I saw it".

it goes straight from zero to 30

Or is it that your massive fat foot mashes the pedal straight into the floor?
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 9:33, Reply)
with your foot off the accelerator, you'd be trundling along at about 5mph. I could work it out more accurately for my car if I could be bothered looking up the idle speed and gear ratios, but I can't.
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 9:35, Reply)
it trundles along nicely in 2nd and to some extent 3rd as well.
useful for car parks and traffic jams

*Taps accelorater for a microsecond, and smashes into the car on the other side* "FUCK, not again !" *taps it again, and goes through front door* "..... shit".

those 1.9 litre turbo diesel engines really make an exceptional sound

So it's almost the size of a big bottle of coke?
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 9:45, Reply)
Each of the cylinders is about the size of a largish can of beer.
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 9:47, Reply)
some diesel is injected as the piston is coming up the cylinder, then it ignites by compression, forcing the piston down again. The next time it comes up, it pushes the exhaust gases out, then on the way down draws fresh air in. There's a system of valves which controls air in and out.
So every second stroke, fuel is introduced into the cylinder. But only a little bit.
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:04, Reply)
Wouldn't a 1l be faster than 3l then, as it's the same amount of fuel, except it takes more energy to push up a 3l piston than a 1l piston, 'cus the energy is disipitated more?
I know that ain't true, but not sure why.
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:14, Reply)
so the resulting explosion is bigger producing more power.
as I understand it anyway
(, Fri 23 Jul 2010, 10:15, Reply)
More space for the fuel-air mixture, so a bigger explosion, as Vipros says.
