I hate couple's evenings, but I hate 'lets set up all our friends with each other' evenings worst.

Good.
There is always one there, one of the single people you invite, who thinks "I'm to good for these people, christ, they're ovbously single, look at them with their blah-blah" and then uses the whole time the next time telling you about how much of a loser those people are, subtally though, and then he goes home and cries to himself at night.
