your best 'saved from the jaws of death at the last minute' experience is 'Tynemouth'.

That's up your way, it is not?
Not too bad if I recall. We visited Lindisfarne and some cracking castles (Alnwick is a good one if I remember rightly).

Northumberland has, I believe, more castles than anywhere else in the UK. Shame most of them are in ruins, Alnwick, Lindisfarne and Bamburgh being the exceptions.

I think. God I love castles: the Welsh borders also has some crackers*.
I think my all-time favourite is Chepstow.
*principally as so few of them saw any action.

I can see why you thought that - it looks like a fucking beauty.

I was in a filthy mood when I visited it and it just utterly wiped it out

I like the way you round a corner on the approach to the village and suddenly there it fucking is, perched on a massive rock.

I also went on a pilgrimage to Holywell, also in Wales.

that I am enthusing here - my incessant whinging is borne of an intense love of many things...and how many other things fail to measure up to them.
When some halfwit is trying to tell me that [insert name of mediocre television programme] is 'awesome', in my head I am comparing it with something genuinely awe-inspiring - such as a fucking great castle, and thus the disaparaging remarks come out.
It's not affected and I genuinely mean it. I don't know where I'm going with this, sorry.

and couldn't be arsed to answer the alt Q. Mainly because I can't think of anything.
Oh, hang on yes - driving home from work tonight, there was a bloke in a Jag not looking where he was going and veering scarily towards me at about, ooh, 20mph. I couldn't evade him due to the proximity of several parked cars.
Then he looked up, saw me heading his way, and corrected his steering before it was too late.
Talk about fucking lucky or what?

And having reread the original post I realise it was actualy the question, and not an alt Q.
I am a massive spastic. In my defence today was my first day back at work after 3 weeks off so my brain is slightly fried.

I thought it was just a place for stag do wrong'uns but it's ace. I'm off for a walk along the coast in a bit. Any pubs to recommend?
(, Tue 31 Aug 2010, 18:07, Reply)
as it's a pig to get to from where I am unless you're driving, even though it's not actually that far.
Some of the more traditional pubs on Tynemouth Front Street are quite nice from recollection, but I couldn't give you any names I'm afraid. Was in The Priory* a few weeks back to see a mate's band and it seemed OK, if not the ideal venue for live music.
*as in the pub on the main street, not the actual Priory.
