I have a pair of each
doesn't it depend what you want to wear them with? Generally though, I would say leather. Some of the high street shops (DP, New look etc) have some fairly cheap but pretty decent looking boots in at the moment.

and just bought some ankle ones. I need some new leather boots but they're hard to find a) reasonably priced and b) with a decent calf size

not a bad price though. I don't need fantastic ones (and can't afford them) just boots with a bit of a heel to wear with the plethora of knitted dresses and cardigans that will emerge with the onset of winter
