It's not a good thing to be so voilent that you would actually punch someone in the face over something as trivial as it being on a whim.

I don't know what goes through someone's head that means they wouldn't think twice about punching someone in the face. My Dad used to tell me a story about one night he went out with a load of heads in the Met Police.
They got more and more wankered, eventually my dad drove home at some silly time. When he woke up the next day and realised he had driven home, the blood drained from his face. He checked for any scrapes, bumps or blood on his car and couldn't find any. He spent the next two months reading the papers for reports on hit'n'run stuff and was terrifide. This was in the 70s, and from that point on, he never touched a drop and drove again.

It's a dick move what you did, but you won't do it again.
