I haven't recieved training yet though so I didn't bother to pick it up.

Fully repair a lead pipe and get over 75 melee
"lights out" gets unlocked and you'll breeze it.
If you get out numbered throw a bunch of dynamite in first.

I'm a few levels off 75 melee
And the best weapon I've found so far is a machete. I'll try to stick to the easier areas, I know it's hard regardless of play style in the early levels.
