Take your gross income excluding share dividends and divide by 1000
*0.5 for people you've been dating less than a month or friends of friends that you're worried might buy you something (eg mates girlfriend)
*1 for friends
*1.5 for best friends and immediate family
*2 for someone you've been sleeping with 3-9 months
*3 for a long-term partner/girlfriend
on up for the love of your life

I mostly worked backwards from how much I tend to spend
but yes, it's much more "oh they'd like that" and then not worry too much about price, than what this might suggest.
