The Cannabis Debate.
This is one of the things I really, really hate.

Especially the people who say 'It harms innocent people'. No it doesn't. If a person chooses to take it (as with any drug), it's their responsibility.

Just legalise it and stop fannying about for feck's sake.

Have you ever heard of someone stabbing someone because they're stoned? No? Neither have I. Strange how it's illegal, then, and alcohol isn't.

Exactly
In the words of the mighty Bill Hicks - "Have you ever seen a stoned person starting a fight? It's IMPOSSIBLE"

Nice one
My peeve on this subject is 'genetically modified super skunk'.

No, you can't buy GM weed and skunk has been around for over 20 years and is no stronger than any other strain you can get.

Plus it is a damn sight better for you than smoking soapbar and getting a lungful of pine resin, turps and plastic bag.

It's just parents looking to blame someone/something
other than themselves. "Little Johnny used to steal from me to fund his cannabis addiction. He'd also shop lift and mug old ladies all because of his cannabis addiction." I'm sorry but that is bollocks. Little Johnny is a little cunt, he just happens to also like cannabis.

Fucking Gordon Brown
on GMTV the other day was going on about how "skunk" was new. Twat. And don't get me started on GMTV, what a shower of twats.

Legalising cannabis would be foolish
...but only if you reject the argument "it should be legal because I want it to be and people should have choice", and take the view "the aim of any drug policy should be to minimise harm caused by the drug to individuals and society."

Saying "have you ever seen someone stabbing someone because they are stoned" isn't an argument which is going to get you on a policy making board, FFS.

Here's some interesting reading comparing the results of two 25 year nationwide policy experiments - the liberal (Netherlands) and the harsh (Sweden).

How exactly is it causing harm to individuals and society? I know a highly successful businessman who is a regular smoker. Like I said, why don't they ban drink? It causes far more harm than cannabis (haven't you seen all these articles about teenage binge drinking on the news recently?)

If you smoke too much dope, you might get the giggles and the munchies.

If you drink too much alcohol, you could easily die.

I wouldn't mind so much if the drug policy was consistent, but it doesn't make sense that alcohol and tobacco - the two worst drugs - are legal.

I think the real issue is that if everyone started smoking, they might start thinking, instead of sitting at home pissed-up watching the TV. They wouldn't want that, would they. Oh no.

I would
Until a few years ago be right there with you about this. people do it already, you may as well make it legal so you can regulate it and make it safe

but in the last few years I have actually seen the psychological harm it can cause. not in all cases by any means, but in the people it does affect severely, the reaction is terrifying. a friend of mine became schitzophrenic after smoking too much weed over the course of 8 years or so. It got so bad that he will now never come out of his psychotic state. and that is largely down to the weed.

so whilst I would usually agree, go legalisation. it does have severe and lasting effects on some people and as such should stay illegal in my opinion.
