This is a question Public Transport Trauma

Completely Underwhelmed writes, "I was on a bus the other day when a man got on wearing shorts, over what looked like greeny grey leggings. Then the stench hit me. The 'leggings' were a mass of open wounds, crusted with greenish solidified pus that flaked off in bits as he moved."

What's the worst public transport experience you've ever had?

Oh God...
Ever tried taking a bass guitar in a hard case through the London Underground in rush hour?

Not in a hard case
But taking my bass on the tube, in rush hour, in its soft case, is a nightmare.

I blame everyone else, and not my own clumsiness.

Yeah, it's not much fun.
I blame the sheep-like masses.
(, Thu 29 May 2008, 15:27, closed)
Oh my
I bet you're popular when you do that!
(, Thu 29 May 2008, 15:30, closed)
In all seriousness
You would imagine that anywhere else in the world people would recognise that you're carrying something cumbersome and give you some room. Somehow people on the tube see you as an inconvenience and do their best to make life more awkward.

I once offered help to a young woman struggling with a cello and she gave me the funniest look, as though I was going to steal it...

I hate it
but then, I'm also guilty of wanting to kill anyone with a suitcase on teh tube. Or anyone eating. Eugh.
(, Thu 29 May 2008, 15:39, closed)
@Gunter
yeah, but were you going to steal it?
(, Thu 29 May 2008, 15:39, closed)
I'll see your bass guitar...
...and raise you a bass guitar, albeit in a soft case, but with a bass amp strapped to a converted granny trolley.

It's when I've got those in tow that I'm all too painfully aware of people's ignorance of the "Please Let Passengers Off The Train First."

You stupid, useless twats. If a large gentlemen has a large slab of wood strapped to his back and a 12" speaker on a trolley, letting him off the train before you tried to board creates more space for your illogically selfish selves. Why can you not see the sense in this? Or are you just afraid that if you don't get on absolutely right now, this fucking minute then the driver's going to hit the gas and go speeding away down the tunnel, making rude faces out the window at you?

al
I may have been thinking about it, but how could she know that...

Unless I was thinking out loud at the time.

I do that.

"Offer to help her with her cello, then steal it and run away laughing".

Thinking back on it now, perhaps that's what I was doing.

Need to stop that.

I'll raise
A guitar in a hard case, AND a bass in a soft case on the Glasgow underground at rush hour.

It was just a bad, bad idea.
(, Thu 29 May 2008, 16:56, closed)
How about...
Uxbridge on the underground/DLR, soft case but still...huge fucker!
(, Thu 29 May 2008, 20:06, closed)
why?
if you go on the tube at rush hour with a guitar you deserve any dirty look you get.

we have business to do, you are a dosser musician
(, Thu 29 May 2008, 22:29, closed)
@$wift
We're on the tube at rush hour with our guitars because we have to spend the day at work before we can go and be dosser musicians in the evening.

No sympathy
Ever tried taking a CELLO in a hard case through the London Underground in rush hour?

Actually, it makes a pretty good battering ram.
(, Fri 30 May 2008, 14:21, closed)
I'll see your Cello
and raise you a full sized Synthesiser in a hard case with a collapsible stand attached with bungee cord to the outside and a 1960's 160W Marshall valve amp on castors from Neasden on the Jubilee Line to Bromley by Bow twice a week for 3 years.

Popular? me?
(, Fri 30 May 2008, 19:52, closed)
how about
a french horn (sorry i'm not as cool as you). It is designed to be the most malshaped instrument ever.
