Asking if someone is a pole Walter makes no sense whatsoever
Whereas, asking a passing athlete who is carrying a long pole if they are a Pole Vaulter to which they reply, "No, I'm German and I'm called Fritz" makes for a joke, a rather poor one, but nonetheless a joke...a play on words...a pun.
