This is a question World of Random

There's a pile of scrap timber, rubble and general turds in the road opposite my work with a hand-written sign reading "Free Shed". Tell us about random, completely hatstand stuff and people you've seen

In the town where I live
hanging by the laces from a telephone wire stretched across a busy street between one of the pubs and the Chinese, are a pair of filthy white rotting trainers.

They were put up there about 5 years ago and have been hanging there defiantly ever since. They've survived some of the worst Cumbrian weather we've ever had and yet they still remain there.

It's a better landmark than that stupid clock that sounds like a WOTW tripod.

Finally burst my b3ta bubble after 4 years of lurking :)

I don't know about up your way, but here in London there was a spate of this in order to ape the New York gangs
who throw the sneakers of erm ... fallen "comrades"/brothers -whatever they call themselves - over telephone wires in order to mark territory and battlegrounds.

According to the Walsall Express & Star (that bastion of fine journalism)
the trainers mark drug dealers' houses

Fair enough. I've just been instructed that gang members refer to each other as "soldiers".
And yet - and yet - whenever they kill each other in some pathetic postcode allegiance battle, they're always referred to as "A promising young footballer" or "gifted academic", instead of of "drug-dealing, illiterate, brain-shatteringly stupid scumbag who got what was coming from well over a mile off, considering that it's pretty well impossible to not be able to predict how it's all going to end up."

That's not how you spell solja bruv.
Innit

Safe.

If it's a girl who's stabbed or shot
she's always an "aspiring model" rather than a chavvy slag

Alternatively
'bubbly and outgoing' frequently means she was a bit dim and not the prettiest.

I highly doubt they were put up there for that reason or anything remotely as subtle as that.

Chances are it was just some drunkards who decided it would be the funniest thing, since Joe Pasquale, to take somebody's shoes, tie the laces together and throw them over the telephone cable.

The only battlegrounds we have here are when the entire town divides into half and fight over a leather ball 3 times every year. ALso known as Uppies and Downies.

welcome
fellow cumbrian!

where is this clock of which you speak? I am intriqued!

Why thank you!

I'm referring to the giant piece of scrap metal in Workington town centre, definitely worth the money spent on it...

I've seen trainers in an even odder place.
There's a pair hanging over a cable in the middle of one of the most traditional streets in Oslo -- one where houses go for around a million dollars.

Ditto 'The Shoe Tree', Studley Green, Bucks.

In Dublin
they mark drug dealers houses.
(, Wed 27 Apr 2011, 12:20, closed)
For real?
If they mark drug dealers houses, and everybody knows what it means, why don’t the drug dealers put up a sign saying “Drug’s For Sale” and be done with it?
(, Wed 27 Apr 2011, 13:55, closed)
because...
Irish drug dealers hate to see an apostrophe misused.
(, Wed 27 Apr 2011, 16:06, closed)
I can't believe they'd not use the grocers apostrophe

(, Wed 27 Apr 2011, 19:46, closed)
Lol
Why's every think they marking drug houses? It's just for a laff innit. You steals sum1s shoos, yeah, an tie em up, chukem, spinnin like, and over dey go, fully around en ova.

It's just a laff. Why would the drug dealers want to mark their house? The cops will just come and take them down with their uzi's and shit. OL SKOOL!
