This is a question Rogues, Villains and Eccentrics

My current toilet book is Brewer's classic encyclopedia of the same name, listing some of the great British nutters down the ages. Let's create a B3TA version based on the dodgy people you've met

Now then nonce now
I once saw Jimmy Saville walking on the other side of the street. I suppose he's just posthumously gone from being eccentric to villain.

Edit: I dug out this link to a Have I Got News for You transcript which I dimly recall being outed as a hoax. Now I'm not so sure.

Blimey
I could read that as what really happened. Merton doesn't take any prisoners does he!

i was never a fan of saville when he was alive
and it irks me to defend him now he's dead.
but not only is that transcript a well-written but definite fake that's rolled around the internet for a fair few years, why are these accusations surfacing now he's safely dead and unable to defend himself in the courts?

probably because there's no real evidence

don't misunderstand me. he was a creepy oddball, but this all just smacks of opportunism to me
(, Mon 1 Oct 2012, 20:29, closed)
I didn't know that about that transcript, Micto
in fact it's the first time i've read it. I actually agree with you on the knocking a dead guy bit; why didn't these people pipe up when he was alive?

But I did watch a BBC researcher on Channel Four News earlier who said she witnessed abuse, and the cynic in me couldn't work out what she could possibly gain from any of this. What troubled me more though, is why the fuck didn't she do anything about what she said she saw at the time?

"why the fuck didn't she do anything about what she said she saw at the time?"
i personally think this is the crucial bit. I saw the Louis theroux doc, i've read various pieces, and yes, the guy was shady, and no question he was an oddball. but why wait till the guy died to villify him? Yes, there is the issue that he was a well-off bachelor who probably had the means to have a strong legal team, but surely if there was any proof, there would at least have been investigations?

Exactly
Even in the seventies it would have been shocking for an adult to get off with a fourteen year old in this country, and for someone to observe it; as she claimed to have, and do fuck all about it seems quite frankly simply odd.

You'd be amazed at the 'odd' choices people
make in these situations that seem to defy all logic and morality but make them they do. Unfortunately I am in a business where I am party to the details of genuine cases along these lines (and significantly worse) and yet folk, often in supervisory or senior roles, just avoid doing anything about it. Even they struggle to explain why in hindsight.

B3ta user Jahled ladies and gentlemen.
Gets the arse on when people make jokes on comedy forums. Happy to defend peadophiles.

The reason his victims didn't say anything at the time was that most of his victims were teenage girls in care homes in remote parts of Britain and Ireland.
He'd visit these care homes under the guise of his charity work. The only people his victims could complain to were the authority figures who left them alone in a room with him.

And were taking his cheques at the end.

(, Tue 2 Oct 2012, 10:37, closed)
And because said victims, being in care homes, were vulnerable and powerless enough to be considered fair game.

I can't think of many reasons that more than one woman as well as associates of his would agree to take part in a program for reasons of opportunism.

The thing with the script which gets me is that even if it didn't actually happen is how it seems so curiously prescient with the latest allegations. Almost as though it might have been written by someone who knew or heard something but didn't want to be sued for it.
(, Mon 1 Oct 2012, 20:51, closed)
the idea that this script is precient is a matter of perspective
when i first read it a few years ago, i believed it and was shocked by it. It fitted with my opinions of the man even while he was alive. But the fact that none of this stuff came out while he could potentially take people to court for libel or slander, gives it all an unsavoury whiff.
(, Mon 1 Oct 2012, 21:43, closed)
oh, please.
would you really prefer that he were alive to continue to use his position and money to hide all this some more?
(, Tue 2 Oct 2012, 10:05, closed)
he was, and should be remembered as, a creepy child molester.
remember haute de la garenne? remember how he was in pictures from their 'open days'? remember how that all got swept under the carpet?

money talks and paedos walk.

and really? opportunism?? fucking hell.
(, Tue 2 Oct 2012, 10:04, closed)
I agree with your sentiment that power/money gives a degree of protection but
I imagine pretty much all kids homes will have lots of photos with charity celebs (and charity celebs didn't come much higher profile than Jimmy Saville back then), I am not sure it is quite as damning as the witness testimony!

And Haut de la Garenne hasn't all been swept under the carpet there is an awful lot of work going on in the background to try and clear up the mess without having to resort to publicising further any vulnerables' experiences. Add to that the hopelessly handled police investigations (I give you the coconut skull) and less a cover up and more a shambles. Unpicking the shite from the reality and then trying to fix/ atone for the problems caused is a big job.
(, Tue 2 Oct 2012, 15:51, closed)
While that script
Is a fake - although not an obvious one - there's other stuff about saville out there:
dangerousminds.net/comments/bbc_faces_serious_questions_over_sir_jimmy_savile_under_age_sex_allegations

This details not just some of those rumours, but mentions the Newsnight investigation into the old creep which was quietly dropped for reasons still to be properly explained.

I LOVE QOTW.
Take the piss out of some humourless semi-illiterate who's trying to claim he's fucked a Blue Peter presenter and you're a troll, but saying 'yeah they've made this all up' in response to accusations of noncing is fair play.
(, Tue 2 Oct 2012, 1:06, closed)
Can you write
that again, but in English this time?
(, Tue 2 Oct 2012, 8:46, closed)
Basically.
Mock autists: nasty troll.
Defend nonces: perfectly fine.
(, Tue 2 Oct 2012, 9:31, closed)
Good point.
I shall never mock you again.

Good innit
I was entertained.

My pleasure. I really did see him coming out of a park at the side of Cardiff castle from the bus stops BTW. His recent beyond the grave allegations just happened to tease that memory out of my head while browsing this challenge.

Dear Jim
could you please fix it for me to take 3 fingers up to the second knuckle.
