This is a question Inflated Self-Importance

Amorous Badger asks: Tell us tales of people who have a high opinion of themselves. Jumped-up officials, the mad old bloke who runs the Neighbourhood Watch like it's a military operation, Colonel Blimps, pompous bastards and people stuck up their own arse.

Petrol Sales Assistant
A few years ago I made the grave error of stepping out of my car to speak on my mobile. Trouble was I was in a petrol forecourt, where speaking on your mobile is strictly forbidden.

Not 15 seconds later the young petrol assistant came swaggering out. I cannot emphasise swagger enough. Chest out, shoulders swinging and with barely hidden delight at his little minute of power. He said in a loud tone "You will need to turn that off immediately."

I was almost finished so made my excuses and said fine. PSA goes back inside with a massive grin on his face. Job done.

You showed him!

So your story is 'I'm too important to follow the same rules as everyone else'?

(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 14:50, closed)
Exactly
I shouldn't have to think about the rules all the time.

but the real issue
was his reaction/demeanor. It was more you had to be there moment I guess, this was his Woodstock.
(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 15:16, closed)

No, this is something he probably has to do at least ten times a day and is sick to the back teeth of doing.
(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 16:35, closed)
You were almost certainly the first and only complete wanker he'd had to deal with in his entire employment there.

Not even slightly the point.
Whether there's a risk of blowing everyone the fuck up or not, pissing about on your phone instead of getting petrol, paying and fucking off so the next person can get petrol, pay and fuck off is the act of a cunt.
(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 16:48, closed)
so you're talking about social norms, not rules?

(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 20:26, closed)
Shame a spark from your mobile didn't ignite the ever-present petrol fumes so you burnt to death, screaming in agony.
*That* would have showed the jobsworth, eh?
(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 15:43, closed)
and if you'd nearly finished your fag before geting out of the car?

(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 16:31, closed)
you prat

(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 17:30, closed)
So ... you ignored a rule and then a spotty herbert told you to obey the rule and so you meekly observed the rule?
Gobsmacking.
(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 17:31, closed)
Just to clarify
although I said my car, it was a works car and I was the passenger. Hopefully one day I will be that much of a cunt as suggested. Still at least I answered the QOTW with my own inflated self-importance. *groans*
(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 18:05, closed)
Do they still have that rule?
I thought even morons knew that mobile phones don't cause fires on forecourts by now?
(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 19:48, closed)
As stated above,
it's less to do with fire hazards, a more to do with getting customers off the forecourt as swiftly as possible.
(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 21:23, closed)
That makes no sense.
Moving away is nothing to do with a phone.
(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 21:45, closed)
Apart from it being illegal to use a phone while driving, you mean?

(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 22:02, closed)
Why all these multiple replies to individual posts?
He's probably James Bond, and uses his.mobile to steer the car. Winding him up will probably put us on an MI6 hit list.

I'm probably being unfair, but there's a staggering lack of hardmen and accordianists, given this weeks question.

It's generally a bad idea to handle anything that generates sparks round large amounts of flammable liquids.
The RF inductor that allows mobile phones to transmit and receive signals generates small high-voltage sparks, which is why the usage of mobile phones is prohibited in petrol stations.

Mobile phones also strictly forbidden in areas where hairspray, perfume, aftershave, nail-polish remover etc. are blended, for the same reason.
(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 22:02, closed)
The only minor problem with this is that it's completely wrong.
We did tests about ten years ago when the Mail carried some bollocks story about it. I've no idea where you got the RF inductor part from ... that sounds like a new addition. And pretty much impossible. The only part of a mobile phone that could ever generate enough of a spark to ignite petrol vapour (let alone liquid petrol) is the battery connection. You'd need to put the phone in the mouth of the tank (that's about the only place with a high enough concentration of vapour) and deliberately prise the battery off or short the charging terminals. That's the part that people spend a shitload of money protecting for the radios that emergency service bods use. The rest of it couldn't light petrol even if you wanted to.

Nobody in the history of the world has ever set fire to a petrol station with a mobile phone or any other consumer wireless device unless they've attached it to a bomb.

tl;dr: bollicks
(, Sat 26 Jan 2013, 22:24, closed)
Bollocks or not, COSHH regulations are against it, and they will remain so until definitive, rigorous proof of mobile phones' safety is submitted and reviewed through the official channels.

Shit law
Created to stop something that is a myth, to saisfy the right wing press induced fear of the irrelevant on their readership/viewers while they continue to consume vast amounts of ciggies, booze and fast food sold by their advertisers.
(, Sun 27 Jan 2013, 5:55, closed)
You prick.
Honestly ... all you needed to do was type "thank you for correcting my misunderstanding" ... how hard could it be?
(, Sun 27 Jan 2013, 8:56, closed)
"Bollocks or not"
I'd love to hear that from someone official
(, Sun 27 Jan 2013, 10:31, closed)
(sigh) Trollololollol etc..
Are you trolling him trolling you trolling him,
Or is he trolling you trolling him, trolling you trolling him ?

I've lost count...

The whole phones cause fires nonsense is a pile of foetid dogwank, so we all know this isn't a serious discussion.
