This is a question Social Networking Gaffes

Freddy Woo writes, "My school bully just friended me on Facebook!" No doubt he pokes him, and then demands his lunch money.

Personally, last month a scantily clad young woman confused me with her fiance, with whom I share a first and last name. I'm still not sure she's noticed, but she's going to be mortified when she does.

What's the biggest mistake you've made using a social networking site?

Clever Students
Lurked for ages but thought I'd share this story.

I lecture at a well known Uni in Oxford and a couple of years ago
a group of us started using facebook. So far so dull really, that was until I typed the name of my subject in to the search box. Up came a load of my students, once again not that interesting. But what made it great fun was the fact a large number of them had joined the "Certain Lecturer is a really really boring man! A support group for survivors of 'Certain Lecturer's' teaching". This chap is a lovely bloke but could bore for a living. After carefully screen capturing the whole group for my own, and colleagues amusement, I sent a short e-mail to the group pointing out that they had broken the Uni's rules and I would be taking the matter further (not that I was ever going to or more importantly could be bothered). Several of them arrived in tears professing abject regret and apologising and asking not to be thrown out (again not really the plan). Upshot was a lot of scared students and some very amused lecturers.

what are your Uni's rules on this?
Or did you make those up?

We've had a couple of facebook bullying issues involving students, but lecturers seem to be fair game and our Uni's rules seem to be outdated and near-impossible to change.

Uni Rules
Technically it broke general reg's on student behaviour - but far too
much trouble to take forward and would have devastated my colleague
who to this day does not know about the group.

How the bollocky fuck...
... do you actually get a job at Oxford (or Cambridge)? I keep on applying, but have never even had an acknowledgement.

I do have my rejection letter from Christ Church, from when I applied to be an undergrad, framed in my study at home, though. It's directly above my PC, so that every time I look up I'm reminded of what a useless cunt I am.

you really
are quite hard on yourself, aren't you? Wise up!

Edit: and besides, the original poster said "a well-known Uni" - it could be Oxford Brookes.

I prefer the word "merciless".
But, in fairness, going to Oxford was something I'd wanted since I was three years old. So it's only right that I should be reminded of my pervasive tosser-ness.

I wanted to be
a) an astronaut, b) a dinosaur, and c) a trawlerman but even though I'm none of those I don't beat myself up about my lack of achievements. Stop being so hard on yourself!

What uni did you go to in the end?
I assume it was still a good one if you were clever enough to apply for Oxford.

Hull first time around
Then Brum medical school, then Brum philosophy department.

Little wonder I'm embittered...

Actually, I liked Hull. And it has very good philosophy and politics departments, which is where I was.

I passed the Oxford exam easily. It was the interview that I fucked up massively.

At the risk of asking a stupid question...
are you a doctor? y'know, what with the medical school & everything...
(, Tue 16 Sep 2008, 15:00, closed)
nah
he's not, he just plays one on the Internet.

Oh wait, he has a PhD, so yeah, he is :)

Getting to med school is an achievement in itself
although I dont think I would want to be a doctor now. Too much stress.

I'm not a medical doctor.
My masters was in Medical Ethics.

And, according to which etiquette books you read, I'm not entitled to call myself "doctor" anyway. For that, you need an honorary doctorate, such as that which medics get.

Go easy on yourself
the only job I'd ever get at Oxford (or any other University) would start with a "J" and end with "anitor".

*shifts chip on shoulder to more comfortable position*

Well
At least you'd have your own broom.....
