What I'm saying is;

common sense and being excellent to each other existed before and outside of religion. The difference between common sense / morality and religion is the stuff like burning harlots, stoning unbelievers etc.

Given that the good stuff can exist without religion, then all religion brings to the party is a belief framework that justifies violence and subjugation.

I think it brings more than that to many frightened people..
Like any belief that there is good in the world it can bring comfort to those who otherwise would be fucked. This is probably why religion was accepted by the masses when it was devised as a way of subjugating them.
