Junk Mail
I save up all the unsolicited mail with the prepaid envelopes, till I've got a good stash (ie about 4days!) . Now prepaid envelopes don't cost them anything unless they are sent so I fill the envelopes with pizza menus, junk from other 'offers' and if they are really lucky drawings by my 4yr old. And pop them in the post box

Spread the word if everyone does it then junk mail will become an unviable method of gaining customers and we can save a few trees.

I know a few people who work in a postroom of a certain company
and every un-stamped 1st class letter that comes in, they keep the stamps. Literally 50 or so a day, I never have to pay for stamps again, woo me :D

I think
everyone does do it.

I used to, but it occured to me I was wasting my own time. I used to collect all the shit Natwest sent me, normally once a year getting a big boxfull and posting it back thought my branches letterbox.

peelings and scraps
My husband used to take great pleasure in collecting up peelings and other veg scraps which he would fill the PP envelopes with and then post. He has now progressed to sending completed visa card and loan applications (less signature) back to the wrong organisations, Barclays application to RBS, etc. It amuses me that he can be arsed.

do they still work
If you tape the envelope to a heavy box

Dunno about a box
But I once sent back a huge envelope (before the postal service changed the letter size/costs) with the PP envelope stuck to the front...

In Australia
you can get stickers that say "no junk mail" - I've only had one lot since I got one.

When I got some I was planning on sending it back COD, or by courier, so it'd be a bigger expense. But I decided to give them a second chance.

Nice
I champion this. Keep the full size a4 pp envelopes and lob in a yellow pages or equally dense local directory. The heavier the pricier.

I've not had any in ages
but I used to fill them up with stones, old screws and washers, fag-ends...anything lying around in the garden really

I already do this
along the same lines, I read somewhere (possibly here, I don't recall) of some chap who would pick out the most egregious offenders, and send them a small amount of copper coinage in their envelope. He would then wait a few days, and write in claiming that he'd made a terrible mistake, and could he have his 7p back please?

Apparently, it causes them a great deal of aggravation - find the money, clear it with accounts, blah, blah - but the end result was always a nicely-cut cheque for some risible amount or other.

I hope it's true.

Now this, I like.

I used to work in a photo shop that did developing & printing
So I took great pleasure in sending back the freepost envelopes from York labs and Tudor photo and the like that got pushed through my letterbox with monotonous regularity.

I saw it as job protection.

Yeh but
I work for a company who are processing an offer for a large electronics company who include a freepost envelope inside the box when you buy a new LCD TV. If you don't want the offer, throw the envelope away. It isn't junk mail, it isn't anything fucking mail, it's a free offer included in the fucking box. And we get some of these envelopes sent back to us full of junk and pizza leaflets.

I've heard a story
Where you post a sign on your box saying 'Unsolicited mail may attract a processing fee of £10 per page'. Then you invoice the companies' posting said mail. I've been assured that it is 100% legally solid.
