Tightwads
There's saving money, and there's being tight: saving money at the expense of other people, or simply for the miserly hell of it.
Tell us about measures that go beyond simple belt tightening into the realms of Mr Scrooge.

Much fruit and veg is labled as class 1
You may think that this means it is the best quality, the tastiest and and the crunchiest.
Bollocks, class 1 one means it looks the best, it's the snobbish do you know who I am d list celebrity that you wouldn't mind a go on but wouldn't want to chat to over breakfast. It's dead inside.
Value lumpy, bumpy and frankly a little odd looking vegetables will/can taste a whole lot better than their botoxed, BMW X5 driving talentless scum bretheren.
In other words don't pay more just because a carrot is straighter.
Reading this back I'm not sure how much sense it makes *shrugs*

"it looks almost exactly like a thingy!"
I'm with you on this.
veg from the market lasts a fuck load longer than supermarket stuff too
and it hasn't been handled by the freaks in the supermarket.
like the evil old crone who I see in my local sainsburys now and then.
damn, she freaks me out. I'm shuddering to think of it now....

Lasts a fuck load longer?
Mine doesn't.
Mind you, that's only because I eat it faster.

when you say "freaks in the supermarket" I do hope you aren't referring to the staff, like what I is one of?

The market stall stuff is usually sourced from S Europe..
..and not S America, Africa etc like the rock hard unripe poo-in-a-punnet served up by the big die-sooper-markts..
Its usually much fresher, and tastier as a result, and oddly 1/3rd of the price (no ground rent overheads like the shops I guess..).
Appreciated I live in a big city, and therefore have a variety of / accessible choices.
The ethnic stores are good too.. curry/spices/henna in giant 30p bags, yummy Polish gingerbread etc *salivates*

Having said that
I recall seeing a market stall guy setting up one morning as I scuttle past on the way to work. He was arranging bananas, first pulling off the distinctive *shitsBerries* plastic baggies.
I guess shops won't accept already ripe stuff, as it can't sit on a shelf for weeks before going off. Incidentally most apples and stuff are 6-12 months old, having been refrigerated and sprayed with gas to stop them ripening. No wonder they taste like paper :(

This is true, however...
Supermarkets usually only have class I fruit and veg on sale loose. Class II stuff gets sold in big bags marked 'economy' or 'basics' - and are often more expensive per pound than the loose stuff! (You can tell easily, since they all have the cost/weight written on the shelf edge label.
Some people will just assume things are cheaper if they're in a larger quantity or have 'economy' stamped on them.

I
Often buy the cheap vegetable/vegetarian meals made from (presumably) cut up ugly vegetables, the thing is once they're cut up you can't see what they look like which leads to them being cheap AND tasty, unlike me - just cheap.
