By naming your daughter 'Neeamhher' but spelling it 'neve'

I mean how does 'niamh' get pronounced like that?

An old girlfriend I once had (honest)
Was called, as in spelt as 'Sibeal' but was called, as in spoken, 'chevelle' like the car.

We didnt last long, just couldnt get my tongue round it.

Trust me - it gets much, much worse.
In Gaelic "mh" is sounded like a v. So's bh, but it's a different type of v sound. (If you're wondering why they don't just use "v", it's because they don't have a "v" in the Gaelic alphabet).

I could explain why you pronounce nia "nee" (or nee-i) but you'd lose the will to live when I start talking about slender vowels and discussing how there should be a nasal twinge to it.
