I work in IT, but on the operations side of things, not development. Part of my job is to make sure the dev team get clear requirements for the programs they are writing for us.
Asking them to conform to coding standards is like lobbing a hand grenade into the room and slamming the door shut. It normally leads to massive civil war, with week long battles about how functions should be named, how many spaces nested loops should be indented by, which editor to use, and where to place brackets. Hilarious!

Force them to conform to the company standard. Failure to comply within the 3 month probationary == dismissal.

We call them "Religious Wars".
Actually the biggest, nastiest Religious War broke out over whether a Jaffa Cake was a biscuit...
(All our workstations are named after biscuits. I'm writing on Garibaldi!)

Thus inflaming it all over again.

Unfortunately he's my project leader, so I can't insist.
Even worse, he changes things but leaves the comments unchanged, so they are no longer correct..
Grrr...!

is the comments. If you can't follow it, it's just that you're not smart enough to comprehend the elegance of the solution.

"emvee, can you have a look at this code and tell me what I'm doing wrong?"
every fucking time, they've not closed a div tag or something
which, if they'd indented properly, or just clicked Dreamweaver -> Command -> Apply Source Formatting, they'd be able so see clearly
