The BBC's video player crashes my browser 9 times out of 10.
I've tried using IE for when I want to use iPlayer but that doesn't help.

yup, everything is right up to date.
It's only the iplayer on the entire internet that does it.

The BBC delivery manager for downloading BBC stuff crashes it too

flash and a javascript library to load the flash
Its a pretty robust bit of kit and I would suggest it might be something on your end. Like the version of flash.

19" widescreen agains 8.9" screen for one.
Surround sound rather than headphones for another.

Also, without rejigging it (which I haven't done yet) you get choppy playback for full screen for embedded players.
