he was an ad-man and the book was a project cynically designed to be commercially successful
he was no Oliver Postgate

Thank fuck for that, I don't think I could stand that level of crywanking on /board again.

I doubt many authors go into it hoping or thinking that their new project will sink without trace
not really a viable income stream

no but some children's authors do it because they love the kiddiewinkles

there's a difference between writing a children's book and hoping it will be successful
and writing one following market testing and research, and brainstorming sessions where you have tried to calculate maximum appeal as if you were planning an advert for a new plastic toy. Maybe I'm just an old romantic* at heart but I think that's horrible.

*haha, I'm certainly not a 'New Romantic' hahahaha

Or you can go the Julia Donaldson route, and just rip off the work of other people

That's how pretty much everything is made now though
If you want financial backers, you have to persuade them using pretty graphs and lots of numbers, much as we'd like to think so concept is no longer king, if kids are involved it's peak cynicism and box ticking

Carle's fault

Nobody did it better

So I think what you're saying is, he tried very hard to produce a book for children based upon what children like?

Gives them something to whine about on Twitter, though.
And in a way, isn't that what they really want?
