let me get this in here
R.I.P. Eric Carle, May 23rd, aged 91, most known for being author of

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Congratulations Eric Carle, aged 91, on your death aged 91 on May 23rd which was the day of your death on May 23rd

(, Thu 27 May 2021, 10:53, archived)
he was an ad-man and the book was a project cynically designed to be commercially successful
he was no Oliver Postgate
(, Thu 27 May 2021, 10:56, archived)
Thank fuck for that, I don't think I could stand that level of crywanking on /board again.

(, Thu 27 May 2021, 11:06, archived)
I doubt many authors go into it hoping or thinking that their new project will sink without trace
not really a viable income stream
(, Thu 27 May 2021, 11:37, archived)
no but some children's authors do it because they love the kiddiewinkles

(, Thu 27 May 2021, 11:40, archived)
there's a difference between writing a children's book and hoping it will be successful
and writing one following market testing and research, and brainstorming sessions where you have tried to calculate maximum appeal as if you were planning an advert for a new plastic toy. Maybe I'm just an old romantic* at heart but I think that's horrible.

*haha, I'm certainly not a 'New Romantic' hahahaha
(, Thu 27 May 2021, 11:45, archived)
Or you can go the Julia Donaldson route, and just rip off the work of other people

That's how pretty much everything is made now though
If you want financial backers, you have to persuade them using pretty graphs and lots of numbers, much as we'd like to think so concept is no longer king, if kids are involved it's peak cynicism and box ticking
(, Thu 27 May 2021, 11:55, archived)
Carle's fault

(, Thu 27 May 2021, 11:57, archived)
Nobody did it better

The modern music industry.
(, Thu 27 May 2021, 16:19, archived)
So I think what you're saying is, he tried very hard to produce a book for children based upon what children like?

(, Thu 27 May 2021, 19:13, archived)
Gives them something to whine about on Twitter, though.
And in a way, isn't that what they really want?
(, Thu 27 May 2021, 11:47, archived)
Morning
I wanted bacon for breakfast this morning, but was bitterly disappointed to discover that it was all gone

(, Thu 27 May 2021, 11:56, archived)
It will certainly come in handy
But I think I'd rather be skint and have peace and quiet in my own home

I've seen that. Great concept - tempted to buy the book actually

(, Thu 27 May 2021, 9:10, archived)
the question is: would that fall under 'no vinyl purchases' or not?

(, Thu 27 May 2021, 9:14, archived)
definitely

(, Thu 27 May 2021, 9:17, archived)
in truth I'm not buying anything for the foreseeable, I overspent on jr's birthday present

(, Thu 27 May 2021, 9:19, archived)
that's a good thing to overspend on though

(, Thu 27 May 2021, 9:24, archived)
Because we haven't been able to go on holiday since summer 2019
The last 18 months has very much been about buying toys. That's how I've justified it, anyway ๐Ÿ˜

as and when the mrs gets back to work, that's when the cool shit can start again for us
until then it's a case of hanging on in there, nervously watching the bailout my mums gave us to stay afloat not-so-slowly trickling away
(, Thu 27 May 2021, 9:47, archived)
Good times will roll again, brother
God knows you guys have been patient enough
(, Thu 27 May 2021, 10:04, archived)
when shit gets tough it does help focus the mind on the small stuff that you can enjoy
a walk in the sun, a nice home-cooked meal, a fucken big fat joint, you know, that kind of stuff

A blustering idiot way out of his depth, a bully demanding respect when none has been earned, a boor who delivers volume and repetition in place of substance, a buffoon who focuses on trivialities and laughs at tragedy, a self-aggrandising narcissist, a overly defensive coward incapable of admitting his own shortcomings, who drops down a gear purely to go through the sombre motions and say the right things when it will save his hide, yet feels and means none of it.
