Kolanticon gel

(, Thu 27 Jul 2023, 12:28, archived)
yeah, that's a thing of the past.
You can still get dicycloverine tablets/liquid though [if clinically appropriate], that's pretty much the only ingredient in it that would have any significant effect.
(, Thu 27 Jul 2023, 12:36, archived)
Dicycloverine, also known as dicyclomine, sold under the brand name Bentyl

(, Thu 27 Jul 2023, 12:59, archived)
According to my pharmacist, yes

He's talking out of his arse, then.
Kolanticon being discontinued has nothing to do with Brexit.

edit: it was made by Peckforton Pharmaceuticals, which was bought up by Abbey Pharma last year. They obviously didn't want Kolanticon, so the Marketing Authorisation was transferred to Dendron Brands (who make Dentinox and Medijel, among other things). They've got the current UK Product Licence, and are authorised to manufacture it by the MHRA, but apparently they can't be bothered. All of this suggests to me that it was neither profitable nor particularly effective for most people, which sucks for anyone who did find it useful.

He is a bit weird, tbh
It sucks that they will discontinue medicines for the sake of profit, even when some patients need it
(, Thu 27 Jul 2023, 13:32, archived)
I think it's more likely to be a problem with either a raw material or manufacturing process/equipment, to be honest.
Availability of Kolanticon has been on and off for a lot of the last decade, and it was unavailable for at least the last year that Peckforton had the MA. They were obviously unable to make it, and then they were bought by another company. Who knows how much of a revenue stream Kolanticon was for them, but perhaps that was a factor. The new MA holders would presumably face the same issues, and reformulating a licensed product would be very expensive and would probably take years.

tl;dr: I suppose the good news is that someone still holds the MA and can still market it in the UK - they wouldn't have applied if they weren't at least considering making it - but don't hold your breath. Hopefully your doctor can prescribe a suitable alternative in the meantime.

Also, did the conversation go along the lines of:
"Why can't you get hold of my medicine?"
"If I say 'Brexit', will you go away and leave me alone?"
(, Thu 27 Jul 2023, 13:59, archived)
Not quite
I'd gone in for the 3rd time in a fortnight because it wasn't in stock. I asked why they couldn't get it and he basically said it was made in Germany and thanks to brexit, we no longer had a trade deal with them
(, Thu 27 Jul 2023, 14:07, archived)
Pretty much exactly what I said, then.
I mean, it may be made in Germany, but that's nothing to do with why it isn't available here. Don't get me wrong, Brexit has fucked up the medicine supply chain in any number of ways, but he just made up that shite about trade deals to get you to go away.
