This is a link post video about catcalls gets criticized for not showing white catcallers
The issues that the article refers to are one thing. Racial stereotyping in a video against abuse. Sad, but to be expected almost.

But why I ask is the woman that is shown in the video threatened with bodily harm, rape and death? And I make the distinction between bodily harm and rape not because I don't believe rape is bodily harm but because I believe rape is a form of bodily harm that is so disgusting that it deserves its own mention.

This and the gamergate thing, along with many others just like it, is disgusting. Threatening people publicly because they speak out on an issue, causing them to leave their homes because they no longer feel safe there, that is so disturbing to me.

There are several of you out there that are active in the creative arts and the media, which is why I'm posting this here.

What can those of us that dislike this development that leads to people in general and especially women to be treated like this? How can one speak out and campaign against it?
How can the haters and tells be put in their place?
How can those that do speak out afforded more support and protection?
How can despicable hate crimes like that be brought to the public's attention?

tl;dr: some people are cunts, how do we stop them?

I'm guessing you are male. You obviously see the issues some women have to live with, and you don't like it; fair enough. You think the people who do it are bad people.
But then interestingly, you refer to them as 'cunts', a slang term for female genitals considered one of the nastiest insults that can be given.

Which sort of takes you full circle.

Discuss.

I had the pleasure of seeing Kate Tempest do a book event earlier this week1. As you can imagine, a female poet tends to draw a fairly feminist crowd, especially when she's speaking in the Brighton area2.

The intake of breath when she spat out that word in the middle of one of her poems3 was audible, followed by a round of laughter. I guess if it's a woman using it, it's OK to use.

1 Yes, I voluntarily attended a poetry recital. This looks bad.
2 This looks worse.
3 The poem in question is called Some Couple, and the fact that I bothered to remember that should encourage you to check it out.

This is a normal post The intent re calling someone a cunt isn't the same everywhere
In most of the US, it's a gendered insult (directed at women) and deservedly taboo, but it isn't here and is often used in a positive/affectionate "he's a good cunt" sense too

One of my friends is an activist re getting more women in to STEM subjects / professions, and she calls people cunts all of the time

that over here it is watered down, much like calling someone a lucky bastard. You aren't really questioning their parentage, and it wouldn't really make sense to do so in the context that it often used. But cunt is still taboo.

This is a normal post Meh.
Cunt as a word has transcended it's original meaning here in UK. It's used as an insult, yes, but it's not gender specific. I would say that a vast majority using the word are probably unaware of it's history. Language evolves and it always will. There will most likely be a day when other seemingly taboo words become "mainstream"

This is a normal post I think the argument of the feminists is that it isn't a new development, that its been going on for decades if not centuries
Feminists in the 70s argued that rape and threats of rape on the street was a way of men controlling women - to keep them inside, to restrict their movements, to keep them under the control of fathers and husbands.
The suffragettes - and the less militant organisations - regularly received abuse for speaking out for women's rights.

This is a normal post it is an old problem
The difference is this recent development on the internet, well recent means ten or so years I guess, where people are threatening and threatened by people that were out of their sphere of influence before that. And the people doing the threatening are supported by others that would previously not have heard of the threats they're supporting. What's worse is that people that would be able to stand up for the people being threatened now receive the same threats.so Rhett don't offer support to the threatened any more. from where I stand it just looks like sit I'd spiraling downwards out of control.
And it makes me angry. That's why I posted this in the first place. I want to hear from people that are relatively media savvy what they think should or could be done.

This is a normal post ok, well the video is of an old non-social media problem, but in answer to one of your questions...
'How can despicable hate crimes like that be brought to the public's attention?'

Well, they already are. Things like gamergate and the video are all over new and old media.

If you want to campaign, again I can't stress how good this book is. Came highly recommended.
www.amazon.co.uk/Campaigns-Voluntary-Sector-Guides-Series/dp/0719916518

Also, you want your social media campaign to be effective. This website details campaigns that other people have done, both big and small, so that others can learn what does and doesn't work and also get some ideas.

The social media part seems unattainable to me as without a Twitter or Facebook account I don't have a base to start from.
And if I use my wife's accounts I'll be opening her up to the same kind of abuse.
Yeah, I know. Sounds bad. I can't campaign for people I don't know because I don't want to expose people close to mwah to the same thing. And that is why the way things are bothers so much.
And I guess why the situation is so bad.
Everyone is ducking and covering while those that are exposed take all the abuse.
What a mess.

This is a normal post well, its like this...
See, there's three kinds of people: dicks, pussies, and assholes. Pussies think everyone can get along, and dicks just want to fuck all the time without thinking it through. But then you got your assholes. And all the assholes want us to shit all over everything! So, pussies may get mad at dicks once in a while, because pussies get fucked by dicks. But dicks also fuck assholes, Chuck. And if they didn't fuck the assholes, you know what you'd get? You'd get your dick and your pussy all covered in shit!

Really, people are going to be dicks, at least some people. You have to be an adult and deal with it.

(, Sat 1 Nov 2014, 22:49, , Reply)
This is a normal post obviously I was being faceatious
but the point is, in this great mass of humanity, some people are dicks. Some people are just dicks some of the time, some people are dicks in certain periods of their lives, some people are dicks in certain environments. There is a whole spectrum of reasons. You just have to be a grown up and stop being a cry-baby about things and learn to live in the world. There is nothing wrong with trying to make the world a better place, but you don't get the right to go around enforcing your values on it.
