need to watch that film again - only seen it the once and years after discovering the book which i liked. not sure about film yet, though i remember it being enjoyable. book could do with a reread too, it's been a while.

they need approaching differently. if i were comparing the film to the book i would have to say it is shit and would not inspire me to seek out the book, had i not read it, which would be a shame. but as a film it's like, y'know, alright. edit: ha, guess i could say the same for '84 and hitchhikers, which i discovered at about the same time book wise.

I read the book and then watched the film
It seemed like a reasonable interpretation of the book, you know like a good attempt if not the best possible realisation of it, but I don't think a film version could ever really do the book justice. The book is just too good for reasons that make it unfilmable.
yeah the time line needs putting together in your own head in such a way that film doesn't lend itself to too well
or something like that... if that even makes any kind of sense outside of my own head

I first read it while in the US Navy (during the Vietnam War)
It was totally logical to me at that point. I could find shipmates who were very much like all of the characters, and many of the situations and dialogue were very plausible.
