Am i right in assuming it's some kind of cassette storage type thing for video? Any help would be greeeeatly appreciated

It's an alternative video format which is still used extensively in the movie and tv industries. Digibeta is just the digital version. They never caught on commercially as consumer products, but they offer advantages for professionals in those fields.
